The heart of the upper Val Passiria
San Leonardo in Passiria is the most important municipality and the administrative center of the upper Val Passiria (Passeiertal), the valley that develops north of Merano following the course of the Passirio stream to its sources under the Passo del Rombo. Surrounded by peaks exceeding 2,500-3,000 meters, the village is located in a wide basin where the roads coming up the valley from Merano and those heading towards the two alpine passes in the area converge. The historic center, with its parish church and traditional Tyrolean-style houses, preserves the atmosphere of an ancient mountain village, today a destination for summer and winter hiking tourism. From here, paths depart towards the mountain huts, the scattered farms on the slopes, and the side valleys, making San Leonardo the ideal base for exploring the entire upper Val Passiria, amidst nature, history, and Tyrolean tradition.
Andreas Hofer, the Sandhof, and the MuseumPasseier
San Leonardo in Passiria is the birthplace of Andreas Hofer (1767-1810), the innkeeper and horse dealer who in 1809 led the Tyrolean popular revolt against the Napoleonic French and Bavarian troops, then occupying Tyrol ceded to Bavaria. After some victories, including the Battle of Bergisel near Innsbruck, the revolt was suppressed and Hofer, betrayed, was captured and shot in Mantua in 1810 by order of Napoleon, becoming the symbol of Tyrolean identity. His birthplace, the Sandhof farm just outside the town center, today houses the MuseumPasseier – Andreas Hofer, one of the most visited museums in South Tyrol: through objects, documents, and multimedia installations, it tells the story of Hofer's life, the events of 1809, and the traditions of the Passeier Valley, offering an essential stop for visitors to San Leonardo.
The Timmelsjoch Pass
From San Leonardo in Passiria starts the road that climbs the high valley up to the Timmelsjoch Pass (2,509 meters), one of the most spectacular Alpine passes in the Alps, which connects South Tyrol to the Austrian region of Ötztal and the town of Sölden. The route, open only in the summer season, is famous among motorcyclists and motorists for its scenic hairpin bends, tunnels carved into the rock, and the high mountain landscape that opens up along the way. Along the ascent, there is also the Timmelsjoch Experience, an open-air museum trail with artistic installations dedicated to the history of the pass, borders, and mountain people. The Timmelsjoch Pass has been the connecting route between the Passeier Valley and North Tyrol for centuries, today frequented by both tourists and two-wheel enthusiasts.
The Jaufenpass and connections to Vipiteno
Oltre al Passo del Rombo, da San Leonardo in Passiria si può raggiungere anche il Passo Giovo (Jaufenpass, 2.094 metri), che collega la Val Passiria alla Val d'Isarco e alla cittadina di Vipiteno (Sterzing). Anche questa strada, panoramica e ricca di tornanti, è molto apprezzata da ciclisti e motociclisti, oltre a rappresentare da secoli un'importante via di comunicazione e commercio tra le valli dell'Alto Adige occidentale. Il valico permette di collegare in giornata l'alta Val Passiria con la Val d'Isarco e la valle dell'Adige, ampliando le possibilità di escursione per chi soggiorna a San Leonardo. Lungo il percorso si incontrano masi isolati, boschi di conifere e punti panoramici da cui si domina l'intera vallata, rendendo la salita al Passo Giovo un'esperienza di viaggio oltre che un semplice collegamento stradale.
Masi, cavalli Haflinger ed escursioni
L'alta Val Passiria attorno a San Leonardo è da sempre terra di masi di montagna, allevamento e agricoltura alpina, con edifici tradizionali sparsi sui versanti soleggiati fino a oltre 1.500 metri di quota. Qui, nella valle di origine del celebre cavallo Haflinger, dal mantello sauro e dalla criniera chiara, ancora oggi si allevano esemplari selezionati destinati sia al lavoro nei masi sia all'equitazione turistica e sportiva. Numerosi masi offrono ospitalità agli escursionisti, con prodotti locali come speck, formaggi di malga e pane di segale. Da San Leonardo partono sentieri di ogni difficoltà verso le malghe d'alta quota, le valli laterali e i rifugi ai piedi delle vette che chiudono la valle, rendendo il paese una base ideale per il trekking estivo, le passeggiate tra i masi e, in inverno, per lo sci e le escursioni con le ciaspole.
