Villa La Montanina and Antonio Fogazzaro
Velo d'Astico's best-known connection to Italian literary history is with Antonio Fogazzaro, who between 1905 and 1907 had Villa La Montanina built, the only residence he designed and truly lived in, personally overseeing every detail together with Venetian architect Mario Ceradini. The villa, standing on the heights above the village, became a place of inspiration for the Vicenza-born writer, so much so that he set his novel "Leila", published in 1910, there. Today the villa stands as an important testimony to Fogazzaro's relationship with the Vicenza foothills, a connection less well known than his ties to Valsolda but equally significant for understanding the final years of his life and literary output.
The Astico Valley and its namesake stream
The municipality takes its name from the Astico stream, which flows through the valley, carving a path between rocks and woods before reaching the Vicenza plain. The Astico Valley is one of the natural access routes to the Tonezza plateau and the Vicenza Prealps, with a landscape alternating rock walls, coniferous woods and small settlements perched on the slopes. The stream itself, with its clear waters, is a destination for walks along its banks and a reference point for sport fishing. The valley still bears traces of Great War fortifications, fought over on these slopes as well, along the border with the then Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Velo d'Astico borders Cogollo del Cengio, the municipality from which the road climbs towards the Tonezza del Cimone plateau, a summer destination for its cooler altitude and a starting point for hikes into the mountains along the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Trento. This position makes Velo d'Astico something of a gateway to the Vicenza mountains, useful for those seeking a lower-altitude base while still having alpine trails and views within easy reach. The area is less trodden than other more famous Venetian mountain destinations, but precisely for this reason it retains an authentic, lightly touristed character.
A foothill village of woods and hamlets
The municipal territory of Velo d'Astico includes several hamlets scattered across the valley's wooded slopes, with an economy combining small-scale mountain agriculture, livestock farming, and still-modest hiking tourism. Traditional local-stone architecture characterises the oldest settlements, while the beech and conifer woods surrounding the village offer numerous trails for walks and hikes of varying difficulty. It is not a municipality built for large tourist flows, but the combination of Villa La Montanina's literary appeal and the valley's natural beauty makes it an interesting stop for those exploring the Vicenza foothills at a relaxed pace.
Great War history and memory
Like much of the Vicenza foothills, Velo d'Astico also bears the marks of the First World War, fought along the front line dividing the Kingdom of Italy from the Austro-Hungarian Empire right across these mountains. Trenches, walkways and gun positions can still be traced in the surrounding woods and represent a historical heritage of great value for those interested in military history and twentieth-century memory. Some of the area's hiking trails retrace these very sites, offering an experience combining nature and historical reflection, in a setting less crowded than the major commemorative sites of the Asiago Plateau.
