Η ιστορία

Η ιστορία του/της San Gregorio nelle Alpi

In the Valbelluna, at the Foot of Monte Pizzocco

San Gregorio nelle Alpi lies in the Valbelluna, the valley followed by the Piave river that connects Belluno to the rest of the province, in a transitional area between hills and mountains. The municipality is dominated by Monte Pizzocco, one of the most recognisable peaks of the Belluno Dolomites, whose summit offers a panorama stretching across the whole valley below. The municipal territory has no single centre, but is organised into several hamlets scattered across the hilly land, each with its own small identity, linked by country roads and paths now frequented mainly by walkers and hikers seeking direct contact with the pre-Alpine landscape.

A Municipality Made of Hamlets

Unlike many Venetian municipalities organised around a well-defined main town, San Gregorio nelle Alpi presents itself as a cluster of hamlets, among which Muiach, Paderno and Roncoi are the main ones. This scattered structure reflects the very history of settlement in the area, which took place through small clusters spread across the hilly land, each tied to its own portion of arable or grazing land. Each hamlet has kept its own character over time, with small churches, rural courts and, in some cases, finer stately homes, making San Gregorio nelle Alpi a municipality best discovered by moving from one hamlet to another rather than focusing on a single centre.

The Venetian Villas of Paderno and Fumach

In the hamlet of Paderno stand some of the municipality's most interesting architectural landmarks: Villa Sandi and Villa Rudio, stately homes that tell of the presence, even in this foothill area, of wealthy families who invested in country residences tied to agricultural management. In nearby Fumach stands Villabruna, a recently restored residence that has given the territory back another piece of its historical heritage. These buildings are less well known than the grand villas of the Venetian plain, but for that very reason they offer a more authentic, less touristic view of villa architecture in a hilly, mountainous setting.

The Church of San Gregorio Papa

The town takes its name from the church of San Gregorio Papa, whose origins date back to 1497. The building, restored and enlarged over the centuries, holds artworks of note inside, including an altarpiece of historical and artistic significance, evidence of the importance this place of worship has always held for the scattered communities of the surrounding hamlets. As is often the case in small mountain municipalities, the church is not just a religious building but also a social landmark, around which the main occasions for community gathering have been organised for centuries.

The Zòche Museum and the Memory of the Miners

San Gregorio nelle Alpi holds two curiosities that say a lot about the identity of the place. The first is an unusual museum dedicated to the "zòche", the tree stumps, a small tribute to the culture of wood and forest that has always shaped the local economy. The second is the "Viale delle lanterne spente", the avenue of the unlit lanterns, a commemorative path dedicated to the memory of local miners who died at work, a lesser-known but significant page of the area's social history. In the hamlet of Roncoi there is also a fitness trail, a circuit of exercise equipment suitable for the whole family, part of the dense network of paths and walks connecting the municipality's hamlets.
