Mogliano between Treviso and Venice

Mogliano Veneto's location is its defining feature: only a few kilometres separate the town from Treviso's historic centre and from Mestre and the bridge to Venice. The road running through it, the Terraglio, was built in Venetian times as a direct link between the two cities and soon became a prestigious avenue, dotted with the residences of noble families who built country villas here. Today this proximity makes Mogliano a town closely tied to commuter flows toward Venice and Treviso, with an urban fabric that alternates residential areas, commercial stretches along the Terraglio, and still-legible remnants of the old Treviso countryside.

The Venetian villas

Mogliano Veneto's most recognisable heritage lies in its Venetian villas, evidence of the town's centuries-long role as a countryside retreat. Villa Braida, with its park, is today one of the best-preserved historic residences and is used for events and hospitality. Villa Condulmer, on the edge of town, stands out for the size of the centuries-old park surrounding it, now home to a resort with a golf course. Then there is the large park of Villa Bianchi Michiel, right in the heart of town, which is the main green lung of the community and retains the nineteenth-century landscape design commissioned by its former owners. Together these places capture Mogliano's spirit well: not an open-air museum, but villas that are still in active use.

The centre and its churches

The heart of Mogliano Veneto is modest in size, fitting for a predominantly residential town, but it keeps a recognisable layout around the main square and the Terraglio. Here stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, the town's religious and architectural landmark, holding artworks that reflect the long tradition of patronage by local families and the surrounding villas. Around the square run the streets of everyday commerce, cafés and shops that give the centre the feel of a place lived in mostly by residents rather than tourists. Visitors shouldn't expect the grandeur of Treviso's or Venice's historic centres: Mogliano's value lies precisely in its human scale, easy to cover on foot in a short time.

History and notable figures

Mogliano's origins lie in the agricultural settlement of the Treviso plain, but it was under the Republic of Venice that the town took on the role it still carries today, as a country retreat along the Terraglio for patrician families of the Serenissima. This context also connects to the painter Giovanni Battista Cima, a figure of the great season of Venetian Renaissance painting, and to a local musical tradition that left its mark on the town's cultural life. In the twentieth century Mogliano grew rapidly owing to its closeness to Venice and Mestre, shifting from an agricultural centre to a mainly residential and partly industrial town, while keeping its historic core and villas intact.

Parks and the surrounding area

Mogliano Veneto's territory is crossed by the Zero river, a spring-fed watercourse that flows gently between farmland and built-up areas, accompanied by several cycling and walking paths suited to a quiet stroll. Alongside the historic park of Villa Bianchi Michiel, the town retains other green areas scattered through its hamlets, remnants of a countryside that, while reduced by urban expansion, has not disappeared entirely. This combination of parks and waterways makes Mogliano greener than one might expect from a town so close to Venice and Mestre, offering a natural counterpoint to the residential and commercial density along the Terraglio.

How to visit

Mogliano Veneto is easy to reach by train, thanks to the station on the railway line linking Venice and Treviso, and by car along the Terraglio or the ring road, with Venice Tessera airport only minutes away. Its location makes it a convenient stop for anyone travelling between the two cities or staying in the area for work, rather than a stand-alone holiday destination: the villas and the centre can comfortably be seen in a few hours, perhaps as part of a wider itinerary devoted to the Venetian villas of the Marca Trevigiana, or as a quiet break on the way to Venice.
