History and origins
Lendinara has an ancient history linked to its position along the Adigetto, a commercial hub of the Polesine since the Middle Ages. The town was equipped with a castle with crenellated towers, of which the Civic Tower survives today, rebuilt between 1738 and 1741, still bearing the marks of Venetian rule: the image of the Madonna on the right tower and the lion of Saint Mark on the left, following an agreement dated 1579. For centuries the town has been a significant cultural and economic centre for the Polesine, earning it the nickname garden of the Polesine.
What to see / main sights
The Civic Tower, the symbol of the town, dominates the historic centre and its images tell of the centuries-old tie to Venice. A short walk from the centre stands the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Pilastrello, raised to minor basilica status by Pope Pius X in January 1911: the church houses the small wooden statue of the Madonna and Child linked to an event considered miraculous, which tradition places on the night between 8 and 9 May 1509. The historic centre also preserves palaces and buildings that reflect Lendinara's role as a reference town for the Polesine.
Nature and surroundings
Lendinara stands along the Adigetto, a branch of the Adige that crosses the Polesine, offering waterside views and embankments that can be walked or cycled. The surrounding territory is typical of the Polesine, flat and agricultural, dotted with waterways and reclamation canals that have historically shaped the landscape of this part of the lower Veneto.
Food, wine and local products
Lendinara's cuisine reflects the farming tradition of the Polesine, tied to rice, garden produce and freshwater fish dishes, in an area historically shaped by canals and waterways. Small local farms offer seasonal produce typical of the lower Veneto plain.
Events and traditions
The Sanctuary of Pilastrello is a destination for pilgrimages and religious celebrations tied to local Marian devotion, with moments of worship that draw the faithful from neighbouring towns in the Polesine. The historic centre also comes alive with markets and public events organised around the Civic Tower and the main squares.
Getting there and location
Lendinara lies in the Polesine, in the province of Rovigo, along the road and rail axis connecting Verona to Rovigo. It is well served by its railway station and the nearby state road, making it a practical reference point for exploring the lower Veneto territory between the Adige and the Po.
