Geography and territory

Ceggia lies in the Veneto Orientale, on the lower Piave plain between the Piave and Livenza rivers, not far from the Venice lagoon. The land is flat and fully reclaimed, crossed by a dense network of drainage canals that still regulate its hydraulic balance today.

From Hungarian raids to Venetian rule

Tradition traces Ceggia's origins to the 9th century, when devastating Hungarian raids plunged the area into marshland; the population, seeking a healthier location, retreated to the higher part of the territory, giving rise to the settlement. According to one hypothesis, the name derives from the Latin "cilia maris", the edges of the sea. For more than three centuries the town was contested land among various lordships, including the da Camino family, until in 1389 it came under the rule of the Republic of Venice.

The great land reclamation

The Serenissima, occupied with its own hydraulic problems in the lagoon, did not undertake reclamation of the lands acquired in the lower Piave, instead favouring the preservation of marshes as a natural defence. Only after the fall of the Republic, from 1797, did the first reclamation works begin on some elevated areas, using rudimentary methods and private initiative; in the early twentieth century landowners began collaborating on joint reclamation, and immediately after the First World War the "great reclamation" took shape with the establishment of united consortiums, transforming the old marshland into today's cultivated countryside.

A farming municipality in the Veneto Orientale

The completion of land reclamation has made Ceggia a municipality with a solid agricultural vocation, with fields of arable crops that today characterise much of the municipal territory, in a landscape typical of the low Venetian plain between the Piave and Livenza.

Village life and the memory of the land

Ceggia's centre retains a simple, residential character, with community life revolving around the parish and local farming activities; the history of land reclamation remains a strong element of identity for the entire lower Piave area.
