The Ponte degli Alpini, a Palladio Masterpiece
The Ponte degli Alpini, also known as Ponte Vecchio, is the symbolic monument of Bassano del Grappa. Designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569 after repeated floods of the Brenta had destroyed earlier structures, the covered wooden bridge combines engineering solidity with architectural elegance, its distinctive truss framework built to withstand the force of the current. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, including after the damage of twentieth-century wars, it is today dedicated to the Alpini corps, who restored it and keep its memory alive. Crossing it on foot, with the river below and the mountains on the horizon, remains one of the most evocative moments of any visit to the town, especially at sunset.
Grappa and the Historic Distilleries
Bassano del Grappa owes much of its fame to grappa itself, the pomace brandy for which the town is one of the historic homes. At the foot of the bridge stands the Nardini Grapperia, founded in 1779 and considered Italy's oldest still-active distillery, with its historic kiosk overlooking the Brenta. A short walk away, the Poli distillery preserves the story of grappa production in its Grappa Museum, from traditional stills to modern techniques. Since the sixteenth century the town has developed a fine ceramic production, characterised by bright glazes, floral decorations and shapes that combine function with elegance. Historic workshops and artisan studios continue to hand down this art, visible in the shop windows of the old town and preserved in the city's museum collections. Bassano ceramics, together with the production of nearby Nove, have helped make the area one of the most recognised ceramic districts in the Veneto, valued for the quality of its craftsmanship and its ability to innovate while remaining faithful to traditional techniques.
The Squares and the Historic Centre
The heart of Bassano del Grappa beats between Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi, two urban spaces that tell centuries of town history.
