The heart of the Agordino
Agordo is the administrative and commercial reference point of the Agordino, the mountain area extending across the western part of the province of Belluno. The town lies in a basin surrounded by the Dolomites, in a position that has historically made it the meeting point of the surrounding valleys.
Piazza Libertà, a monumental square
Piazza Libertà is the urban heart of Agordo, one of the largest and most scenic squares in the province of Belluno. Historic buildings face onto it, including the former Servite convent, now used as offices for public administration, testifying to the importance the town has held over the centuries.
From mining to eyewear
For centuries the economy of the Agordino was linked to mining activity, in particular the extraction of ferrous and non-ferrous minerals in the surrounding valleys. In 1961 Agordo became the founding place of Luxottica, the company created by Leonardo Del Vecchio that would turn eyewear manufacturing into one of the most important economic sectors of the whole area.
The Dolomites: Civetta and Framont
The municipal territory of Agordo opens onto some of the best-known Dolomite groups in the province of Belluno. To the west stands the Civetta massif, a celebrated destination for alpinism, while to the east lies the Framont group, offering hiking routes towards the higher elevations of the Agordino.
Mountain life
Despite the industrial development linked to eyewear manufacturing, Agordo retains a distinctly mountain character, with a compact historic centre and daily life shaped by the closeness of the mountains. The town remains the most convenient starting point for those wishing to explore the valleys and trails of the Agordino.
