Geography and location in Tuscany
Garfagnana occupies the northern part of the province of Lucca, in a narrow and elongated valley crossed by the Serchio river, which originates in the Apennines and flows towards the plain of Lucca. To the west rise the Apuan Alps, a chain of limestone reliefs famous for marble and deep karst caves; to the east and north, the territory borders the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, on the border with Emilia-Romagna. This position between two mountain ranges has made Garfagnana for centuries a transit land between Tuscany, Lunigiana, and the Po Valley, crossed by ancient communication and trade routes.
History and identity
Terra de confín entre o Estado de Lucca, o Ducado de Módena e Florença, a Garfagnana foi longamente disputada e fortificada: castelos e fortalezas ainda pontilham as aldeias hoje, como a Rocca Ariostesca de Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, que no século XVI foi sede do poeta Ludovico Ariosto, enviado como governador pelo duque de Ferrara e aqui também envolvido na redação do Orlando Furioso. Bagni di Lucca, por outro lado, desenvolveu uma identidade própria ligada ao termalismo, tornando-se no século XIX uma das estâncias termais mais frequentadas da Europa, destino da aristocracia inglesa e europeia. Barga, de tradição lucchese, manteve laços culturais com a Escócia devido à forte emigração dos seus habitantes nos séculos XIX e XX.
Paisagem e natureza
O território da Garfagnana é em grande parte protegido pelo Parque Regional dos Alpes Apuanos e pelo Parque Nacional do Apenino Tosco-Emiliano, duas áreas que guardam paisagens muito diversas: os picos dolomíticos e as grutas cársticas das Apuanas, incluindo a famosa Grotta del Vento perto de Fornovolasco, e as cristas gramíneas, as florestas de faias e as turfeiras dos Apeninos, como na reserva de Orecchiella. O rio Serchio atravessa todo o vale, alimentando também os lagos artificiais de Vagli e Isola Santa, enquanto os bosques de castanheiros, outrora fundamentais para a alimentação local, ainda cobrem vastas encostas. É uma natureza selvagem e frequentada por excursionistas, caçadores de cogumelos porcini e entusiastas de trekking ao longo dos muitos trilhos sinalizados.
Aldeias e lugares para ver
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, with its Rocca Ariostesca and the historic center gathered around the Fortezza di Mont'Alfonso, is the main administrative and commercial center of the valley. Barga, perched on a hill, preserves the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral of San Cristoforo and one of the most evocative medieval centers in the area. Bagni di Lucca preserves the atmosphere of its 19th-century thermal baths, the Ponte delle Catene, and period villas along the Serchio river. Gallicano is the gateway to the Grotta del Vento, while Camporgiano is dominated by its fortified fortress, and Piazza al Serchio, in the upper valley, is a starting point towards the Apennine passes and the sanctuary of San Pellegrino in Alpe.
Food and traditions
The cuisine of Garfagnana is born from a poor mountain economy but rich in flavors: Garfagnana IGP spelt, grown on small terraced plots, is the basic ingredient of traditional soups and broths. Chestnuts, dried in metati (drying houses), become neccio flour for necci, thin crepes cooked between two cast-iron plates, still prepared at village festivals. There are also porcini mushrooms, chestnut honey, cured meats like biroldo, and cheeses from small local dairies. Autumn festivals dedicated to chestnuts, mushrooms, and spelt mark the calendar of the villages, while the transhumance trails tell of a still-living bond between the community and the mountain territory.
