Η ιστορία του/της Fabbriche di Vergemoli

Introduction and location

Fabbriche di Vergemoli lies in the upper Garfagnana, in the province of Lucca, along a valley carved by the Turrite Secca stream, a tributary of the Serchio river. The municipality, created in 2015 from the merger of Vergemoli and Fabbriche di Vallico, stretches across chestnut woods and limestone cliffs on the edge of the Apuan Alps Park. A few hundred residents live scattered across small mountain hamlets, reached by winding roads that climb from the Lucca plain toward higher altitudes, amid a landscape of rare rural authenticity.

History and origins

The area's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when its villages belonged to the domains of the Republic of Lucca. The name 'Fabbriche' recalls the old paper mills and water-powered workshops that harnessed local streams for papermaking, an activity that long shaped the valley's economy. Vergemoli, perched at a higher altitude, retained a more agro-pastoral character. Between the 19th and 20th centuries the area experienced significant emigration abroad, particularly to Scotland, where many families from these villages settled and opened businesses, a bond still remembered by the local community today.

Nature and landscape

Part of the municipal territory falls within the Apuan Alps Regional Park, a protected area known for its karst formations, marble and limestone cliffs, and a dense network of hiking trails. Beech and chestnut woods cover the slopes, while streams and small bodies of water, such as the one near Isola Santa, dot the landscape with pools set among the mountains. The combination of rugged peaks and narrow valleys makes this one of the wildest and least developed areas of northern Tuscany, popular with hikers and cavers alike.

Things to do and see

Among the experiences worth having is a visit to the Grotta del Vento in Fornovolasco, one of Italy's best-known show caves, offering guided tours of varying length through underground chambers, small pools and limestone formations. The hamlet of Isola Santa, set beside the artificial lake of the same name, provides a scenic backdrop for photography walks and short hikes. The historic center of Fabbriche di Vallico, with stone houses lined along the stream, invites a stroll through narrow lanes and small bridges. Numerous mountain trails link the hamlets, allowing treks of varying difficulty toward the peaks of the Apuan Alps.

Flavors and traditions

Local cuisine is rooted in the peasant traditions of the Garfagnana, where chestnuts, porcini mushrooms and farro have formed the basis of mountain diets for centuries. The chestnut tree, once called the 'bread tree' for the use of its flour, remains a symbol of the subsistence economy that shaped these villages. In the autumn months, village festivals celebrate the chestnut and mushroom harvests, gatherings that keep old customs alive. Simple dishes based on soups, farro and mountain-pasture cheeses still grace the local table today, reflecting a direct bond with the surrounding mountain territory.
