The story

The story of Siror

Siror in the Primiero Valley

Siror lies in the northern part of the Primiero valley, in Trentino, along the course of the Cismon stream that flows through the valley down from the surrounding Dolomites. The village is today part of the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, formed from the merger of the area's historic communities. Its position on a plain at the foot of the mountains made Siror a historic crossing point between the valley floor and the high mountain pastures, keeping a close bond with the agricultural and forest land that still surrounds it today.

An Ancient Village of Primiero

Siror is one of the historic settlements of Primiero, once an independent municipality before merging into today's unified administration. Its historic territory once extended to include the area of San Martino di Castrozza, later separated as the Dolomite resort developed in more recent times. The heart of the village still preserves its traditional layout, with rural stone-and-wood houses typical of Primiero's alpine architecture, evidence of a community that long lived from farming, livestock and forestry.

At the Foot of the Pale di San Martino

The landscape around Siror is dominated by the Pale di San Martino, an imposing Dolomite massif recognised as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, whose rock walls rise beyond the woods and meadows of the valley. The Cismon stream flows near the village, fed by waters descending from the surrounding valleys, framing the landscape with its riverside vegetation. Coniferous woods, high-altitude pastures and hay meadows form a still-intact natural environment, a refuge for alpine wildlife and an ideal setting for mountain lovers in every season.

Hiking and Village Life

Siror is an excellent starting point for hikes across the Primiero valley, with trails winding through the surrounding woods and linking the valley floor to mountain huts and alpine pastures toward the Pale di San Martino. Strolling through the village lanes, visitors can admire the traditional houses and enjoy the quiet pace of local life, away from mass tourism. Its proximity to San Martino di Castrozza makes Siror a convenient base also for those seeking ski lifts, slopes and more structured tourist facilities, while retaining a more authentic and low-key character.

Flavours and Traditions of Primiero

The cuisine of Primiero, of which Siror is part, is rooted in the mountain farming tradition: alpine-pasture cheeses, typical cured meats, polenta, mushrooms and game-based dishes speak of an ancient bond with the land. Popular traditions handed down through the Trentino valleys are still expressed today in seasonal festivals, small markets and community gatherings tied to the farming calendar and the mountain seasons. Tasting local products at mountain huts or refuges in the area is an authentic way to truly get to know the spirit of Primiero.
