Appiano: the wine town on the Wine Route

Appiano sulla Strada del Vino unfolds across a sunny plateau that slopes gently down towards the Adige Valley, along the South Tyrolean stretch of the Wine Route (Weinstraße), the food-and-wine itinerary linking Bolzano to Salorno through the region's most celebrated wine towns. The municipality includes the villages of San Michele, home to the town hall and commercial heart, San Paolo, one of the oldest wine-growing areas, and Cornaiano, with its villas and gardens. The mild climate, sheltered by the Alps and open to the south, has favoured vine cultivation since Roman times, making Appiano an essential stop for anyone visiting South Tyrol in search of rural landscapes, farming traditions and an atmosphere that blends Central European rigour with Mediterranean warmth.

Vineyards, wines and wineries

Appiano's reputation rests above all on its wines: the hilly terrain, sunny exposure and marked day-night temperature swings create ideal conditions for viticulture. Among the most widely grown varieties are Pinot Bianco, the benchmark white grape of South Tyrol as a whole, Schiava, a traditional red grape with a delicate profile, and Pinot Noir, which finds here one of its most suited terroirs in Italy. Dozens of wineries, from historic family estates to local cooperatives, open their doors for tastings, guided walks through the vine rows and direct sales, offering a close-up view of a craft handed down through generations and a chance to enjoy labels that have carried Appiano's name onto international markets. Many estates also organise wine-themed walking and cycling routes through the vineyards, with scenic stops and local food pairings.

The castles of Appiano: Hocheppan and its frescoed chapel

Appiano is also known as the town "of a thousand castles" for its exceptional concentration of manors, noble residences and medieval ruins overlooking the hills. The most famous is Castel d'Appiano (Hocheppan), a thousand-year-old fortress that dominates the valley and houses a small Romanesque frescoed chapel, among the best-preserved painting cycles in the Alpine arc, with scenes of daily life and figures that bring the Middle Ages vividly to life. Not far away stand Castel Boymont, set in the woods above Lake Monticolo, and Castel Corba, another witness to the area's ancient feudal power. A route linking these manors takes visitors through landscapes of vineyards and forests, combining a hike with historical and artistic discovery, with panoramic viewpoints stretching from the Adige Valley to the Dolomites in the distance.

Lake Monticolo and nature

A few minutes from the centre of Appiano lie the lakes of Monticolo (Montiggler Seen), two natural bodies of water surrounded by a forest of pines and oaks, among South Tyrol's most popular summer swimming spots. The larger Lago Grande, swimmable and equipped with lidos and free beaches, and the smaller, wilder Lago Piccolo, reserved for naturist bathing, offer a cool oasis just steps from the vineyards. Trails for walking, cycling routes and picnic areas wind around the lakes, while nearby the Rastenbach Gorge offers striking natural scenery, with rock walls and streams inviting short excursions away from the summer heat. The whole area, shaded and protected, is also popular with families and birdwatchers for the variety of species that inhabit the surrounding woodland.

Villages, apples and surroundings: Bolzano and Caldaro

Besides wine, Appiano is also apple country, its orchards joining the vineyards to shape the South Tyrolean farming landscape through spring blossoms and autumn harvests. The villages of San Michele, San Paolo and Cornaiano preserve well-kept historic centres, churches and squares that invite unhurried strolls between tastings. Its strategic position makes Appiano an excellent base for exploring the whole region: Bolzano, the South Tyrolean capital with its historic centre and museums, is just a few kilometres away, as is Caldaro, another symbolic town on the Wine Route overlooking the lake of the same name. A territory that invites slow travel, made of wine tastings, castle visits, lake swims and trips to the neighbouring villages, easily reached by bike thanks to the Wine Route's network of cycle paths.
