Ortisei, the valley's capital, is the liveliest center, with arcaded streets full of woodcarving shops, the Museum Gherdëina, and the cable car that ascends towards the Alpe di Siusi and Seceda, the latter known for the panorama of the Odle mountains. Santa Cristina Valgardena, in the center of the valley, is the starting point for the Sella and for the lifts that lead towards the Sella Pass and the Vallunga. Selva di Val Gardena, at the western end, is the closest base to the Gardena Pass and the Sella Pass, and is one of the access points to the Sellaronda ski circuit, which connects Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba, and Val di Fassa.
Food and traditions
The cuisine of Val Gardena reflects the South Tyrolean mountain tradition: canederli (dumplings) in broth or with melted butter, Alto Adige speck, alpine pasture cheeses, and polenta-based dishes accompany the menus of local huts and restaurants, often served with wines from the nearby Isarco Valley and the Bassa Atesina. Alongside the table, craftsmanship remains alive: woodcarving, practiced by generations of Val Gardena families, still produces sacred statues, nativity scenes, and toys sold in the shops of Ortisei and Santa Cristina, while seasonal events and markets keep the link between Ladin culture, craftsmanship, and alpine agricultural life visible.
