Pieve di Soligo की कहानी
History and origins
The municipality's name derives from the ancient pieve, the mother church on which the religious communities of neighbouring villages depended, built along the Soligo stream in a position strategic for trade and exchange among the surrounding hills. Over the centuries Pieve di Soligo consolidated its role as a market and service centre for an area wider than the municipality itself, a function it still holds today for the hill villages around it.
Andrea Zanzotto and cultural life
Andrea Zanzotto was born in Pieve di Soligo in 1921 and spent most of his life there, until his death in 2011. His poetry is deeply steeped in the landscape of these hills, the Soligo stream, local dialects and the agricultural seasons, and is today regarded as one of the most important voices in late twentieth-century Italian literature. The bond between the poet and his town remains alive through cultural initiatives and places dedicated to him, making Pieve di Soligo a destination of interest for literature lovers as well as wine enthusiasts.
The UNESCO Prosecco hills
Pieve di Soligo lies within the area recognised in 2019 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Hills of Prosecco of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a unique landscape shaped by centuries of viticulture on steep slopes known locally as ciglioni. Scenic routes and wine roads set out from the municipal territory, allowing visitors to cross this internationally recognised landscape on foot or by bicycle, amid vine rows, small woods and hamlets.
Food and wine
Prosecco Superiore DOCG is the area's signature product, grown and vinified by numerous wineries, many family-run, which open their cellars for tastings and visits. In the hamlet of Solighetto, the soprano Toti Dal Monte was also born, a figure who shows how these hills have produced talent beyond winemaking as well. Local cuisine, made of simple traditional Treviso farmhouse dishes, naturally accompanies the wine tasting.
Local life and economy
Winemaking is the main economic driver of Pieve di Soligo, supported by a more developed network of shops and services than in neighbouring small villages, thanks to its historic role as the area's reference centre. The town balances the everyday life of its residents with growing wine, food and cultural tourism, concentrated mainly in the spring and summer months along the wine roads.
