Pernumia की कहानी

On the Via Annia, between Rome and the Padua plain

The territory of Pernumia was already inhabited in pre-Roman and Roman times, as shown by numerous finds in the surrounding countryside, including funerary inscriptions indicating a settled residential presence. In Roman times Pernumia was a settlement located along the Via Annia, the important consular road linking Bologna to Aquileia across the whole of Veneto: a position that made it, since antiquity, a small commercial reference point along a major transport axis. This Roman origin, less striking than a large archaeological site but nonetheless well documented, gives Pernumia a historical depth greater than its modest present-day size might suggest.

The castle destroyed by Ezzelino

The first written mention of Pernumia dates back to 970, in a donation document from Bishop Gauslino, while its ancient parish church, with the right to administer baptism, is already recorded in 1045 when it was donated to the chapter of Padua Cathedral. In the thirteenth century the village had its own castle with defensive walls, which in 1236 was razed to the ground by the troops of Ezzelino da Romano, who was at the same time besieging nearby Monselice. The walls were partly rebuilt in 1267, thanks to improved building techniques and land reclamation works, but of that medieval fortification only indirect traces remain today, preserved more in the village's historical memory than in visible monumental remains.

The Ca' di Dio and the church of Santa Giustina

Among the buildings that still tell the story of Pernumia today is the Ca' di Dio, a construction of medieval origin that was once the seat of the Paduan guard, associated with the nearby bell tower of the eighteenth-century parish church dedicated to Santa Giustina, virgin and martyr, one of the oldest parish churches in the diocese of Padua. This complex, sober but rich in history, forms the core of Pernumia's small historic centre and is the ideal starting point for understanding the layering of different periods, from the medieval era to the eighteenth century, that characterises the village.

Villa Maldura Grifalconi Bonaccorsi

Completing Pernumia's historical picture is Villa Maldura Grifalconi Bonaccorsi, an eighteenth-century residence surrounded by a large park, which houses the splendid oratory of the Santissima Trinità, decorated with valuable fifteenth-century fresco fragments. It is evidence of the presence of noble Paduan families in this stretch of lowland, drawn by the fertility of the land and its proximity to both Padua and the Euganean Hills. The villa, together with the rest of the small local historical heritage, allows Pernumia to be read as an authentic piece of the rural and aristocratic history of the province of Padua.

A farming village between Padua and the Euganean Hills

Beyond its Roman and medieval history, Pernumia is today a small farming municipality, set within a landscape of cultivated fields stretching between the southern outskirts of Padua and the first slopes of the Euganean Hills. It has no old town rich in monuments, and it is fair to say so clearly: its strength lies in the combination of a precisely documented past, from the Via Annia to the Ezzelino-era castle, and a present made of quiet farming life. For those visiting the Euganean Hills or travelling between Padua and Monselice, Pernumia is a secondary but genuine stop, able to tell the story of the Padua lowlands honestly, without forced tourist trappings.
