Nogara

History and origins

Nogara has always been a place of passage in the Lower Verona plain, a position that became firmly established with the arrival of the railway. The station opened on 1 October 1912 with the opening of the stretch from Ostiglia on the Bologna-Verona line, while the pre-existing Mantua-Monselice line was diverted to pass through the new station, abandoning the original one opened in 1886. This role as a junction has profoundly shaped the town's development, setting it apart from other farming centres in the area.

What to see / main sights

Nogara's railway station, completely renovated after the track-doubling works - the stretch towards Isola della Scala opened in 2002 and the one towards Poggio Rusco completed in 2009 - is in itself of interest to anyone tracing the history of transport in the Veneto, with its raised platforms, lifts and new shelters. The town centre, simple and functional in layout, reflects its character as a farming community that grew up around a communications hub.

Nature and surroundings

The municipal territory is typical of the Lower Verona plain: an irrigated plain, fields planted with cereals and fodder crops, and reclamation canals tracing a regular grid across the landscape. It is an area suited to cycling routes through the countryside and the small neighbouring towns, far from mass tourism and closer to an idea of authentic rural Veneto.

Getting there and location

Nogara lies about one hundred kilometres southwest of Venice and about thirty kilometres south of Verona, at the junction of the Bologna-Verona and Mantua-Monselice railway lines. Few towns in the area enjoy such a privileged logistical position, a crossroads of both national roads and rail connections, which makes Nogara easily reachable from several directions.

Local life and economy

Nogara's economy rests on a balance between agriculture, typical of the Lower Verona plain, and services linked to the town's role as a transport hub. This dual nature, agricultural and logistical, has allowed Nogara to maintain a more diversified economic fabric than other farming municipalities in the area, with small service businesses grown up around the station and road connections.
