Gallio की कहानी
The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni
Gallio belongs, together with Asiago, Conco, Enego, Foza, Lusiana and Roana, to the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, a prealpine and dolomitic basin in the northern Vicenza area bordering Trentino. The territory, ranging between roughly one and two thousand metres, alternates conifer woods, high mountain pastures and settlements of ancient origin, and today draws both summer and winter mountain tourism.
Cimbrian Roots
The plateau was long inhabited by the Cimbri, a community of Germanic origin who spoke their own idiom, Cimbrian. The language is now preserved by only a small number of speakers in a few localities, but its legacy remains visible in place names and in popular traditions found across the plateau, including Gallio, where old names of hamlets and mountain huts still recall this heritage.
The First World War
Lying on the front line between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the plateau was the scene of harsh fighting, culminating in the 1916 Strafexpedition that razed most of its towns, including Asiago. Gallio's territory still holds trenches, communication trenches and military positions, now accessible along the trails of the open-air Great War ecomuseum connecting the plateau's seven municipalities.
Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Sports
The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni is known as Italy's little Finland for the extent of its cross-country ski network, which totals more than five hundred kilometres. Gallio is home to a ski-jumping facility, and the municipal territory is crossed by Nordic skiing trails that in winter connect the plateau's woods and mountain huts.
Woods, Mountain Huts and Landscape
Outside the winter season, Gallio's territory offers a landscape of woods, meadows and mountain huts typical of the plateau, suited to walking and hiking. The malghe, still linked to summer alpine grazing, remain a distinctive feature of the prealpine landscape and a reference point for those following the area's trails.
