Feltre की कहानी

The Renaissance walled citadel

At the heart of Feltre is its walled citadel, built on the hill overlooking the Piave valley and almost entirely rebuilt after its destruction in 1509. The walls, reinforced with towers and lined with walkways, enclose a compact urban layout: uphill lanes, stone stairways and small openings connect the gates leading into the upper town. Climbing towards the citadel means walking through an urban fabric that has essentially remained unchanged since the sixteenth century, with buildings lined up along the main axis and views that suddenly open onto the surrounding Dolomites. The town walls, among the best preserved in the region, can still be followed along several stretches, offering a privileged vantage point over the rooftops of the town and the mountains around it.

Piazza Maggiore and the frescoed houses

Piazza Maggiore, redesigned by Andrea Palladio in the sixteenth century, is the living room of the upper town: it is framed by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Fontana Lombardesca and some of the most representative buildings of the historic centre. From the square runs Via Mezzaterra, the citadel's main axis, along which facades painted with grotesques, mythological scenes and false architectural elements follow one another, evidence of the decorative wealth Feltre achieved during the full Renaissance. Many of these frescoes, the work of local and Venetian craftsmen, have been restored in recent decades and remain legible despite the centuries, making the walk along the main street one of the densest itineraries of painted architecture in the Veneto.

The Castello di Alboino

At the top of the hill, behind the citadel, stand the ruins of the Castello di Alboino, named after the legendary king of the Lombards. The fortification, of ancient origin and repeatedly expanded during the Middle Ages, has lost most of its original structure but retains stretches of wall and the dominant position that once made it the town's defensive stronghold. Today the castle area is a scenic spot reachable on foot from the historic centre, from which the view sweeps over the rooftops of Feltre, the Piave valley and the Vette Feltrine in the background, offering one of the most complete views over the walled town and the surrounding Dolomite landscape.

The Palazzo della Ragione and the Teatro de la Sena

Facing Piazza Maggiore, the Palazzo della Ragione was built to a design by Andrea Palladio in 1552 as the seat of the town's magistrates, with a portico that still characterises the square's front today. Inside the building is the Teatro de la Sena, an elegant eighteenth-century wooden theatre built according to the scenographic principles of the Bibiena school, a renowned family of theatrical architects. With its wooden tiers of boxes and stage painted in perspective, the theatre is one of the few well-preserved examples of this kind of architecture in Italy and is still used for performances and guided visits, making the Palazzo della Ragione one of the town's most significant landmarks.

The Duomo and the archaeology

Feltre's Duomo, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle, stands at the highest point of the old town, on an area frequented since Roman times. Excavations carried out in the spaces adjoining the cathedral and in the nearby baptistery have uncovered remains of Roman and early Christian buildings, now open to visitors along an archaeological route that unfolds beneath and beside the present-day church. The layering of different eras, from ancient structures to the medieval and Renaissance phases of the religious building, conveys the image of a town continuously inhabited for over two thousand years, with the Duomo hill as its original and sacred nucleus.

The Palio and the traditions

Every year, generally on the first weekend of August, Feltre relives its medieval and Renaissance past with the Palio di Feltre, a historical re-enactment in costume that involves the town's four historic districts in parades, games and the horse race that decides the winner of the banner. The streets of the citadel come alive with flags, processions in period dress and themed markets. In winter, the most deeply felt tradition is instead the Epiphany Panevin, the great bonfire that closes the Christmas season: in the villages around Feltre, piles of wood are set alight, and according to farming tradition their smoke indicates how the new year will unfold.

The Vette Feltrine and the Dolomiti National Park

A few kilometres from the historic centre, Feltre is the main gateway to the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, established to protect one of the wildest mountain groups in the Dolomites. The Vette Feltrine, rising south of the town, offer hiking trails, mountain huts and environments ranging from beech woods to high-altitude grasslands, up to the rock faces of the steeper slopes. The park is known for the richness of its flora and fauna, home to chamois, golden eagles and a remarkable botanical variety linked to the Dolomite limestone bedrock, and represents the natural, mountain-bound continuation of a visit to the walled town.

How to visit

Feltre's historic centre can comfortably be explored on foot in half a day, starting from Piazza Maggiore and climbing Via Mezzaterra up to the ruins of the Castello di Alboino. The town is connected by train and bus to Belluno and Padua, making it a good base for those travelling between the Venetian plain and the Dolomites. The spring and summer months are ideal for combining a visit to the historic centre with a hike in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, while winter offers the intimate atmosphere of the snow-covered citadel and, in January, the Panevin bonfire.
