Carmignano Di Brenta की कहानी
Ancient origins on the Brenta
The origins of Carmignano di Brenta are very ancient: the earliest settlements date to the Neolithic, when tribes established themselves in this territory along the river. Around the 8th century BC the ancient Veneti settled here, presumably near the old bed of the Brenta. Archaeological finds, including a pre-Roman Venetic bronze axe from the 7th century BC and Roman-era material along the route of the Via Postumia, built in 148 BC, confirm the presence of pre-Roman settlements in the area.
The castle contested between Padua and Vicenza
The earliest documentary evidence of the town's existence dates to the 12th century, with a document relating to its castle, at the centre of the dispute between the communes of Padua and Vicenza. In 1178 it was conquered and destroyed by the Marquis d'Este, Obizzo; rebuilt by the Vicentines, it was retaken by the Paduan army in 1196 and 1198, confirming the town's strategic position along the river.
The Brenta river and the town's name
The river, called Medoacus by the Romans and later Brenta according to the etymology linked to the Cimbri, was for centuries one of the territory's main routes of communication and trade. Only in 1867, a year after Veneto's unification with the Kingdom of Italy, was the specification "di Brenta" added to the town's name, to distinguish it and underline its link with the watercourse.
Manufacturing tradition: the Lanaro papermill
In 1875 Gerolamo Lanaro founded Carmignano's first papermill, which changed hands several times over the years, starting an industrial and manufacturing tradition that has shaped the town's economy well beyond its original agricultural character. The municipality still retains a manufacturing vocation alongside the farmland stretching along the banks of the Brenta.
