Renon की कहानी

The Panoramic Plateau Above Bolzano

Renon stretches out as a broad, grassy and wooded plateau northeast of Bolzano, at altitudes of roughly 900 to 1,200 metres, offering a cooler and milder climate than the valley floor below. Since the late nineteenth century this plateau became a summer holiday destination for Bolzano's bourgeoisie, who built Art Nouveau villas and hotels here to escape the city heat: this is the tradition of the "Sommerfrische", the alpine summer sojourn widespread throughout the German-speaking Alpine area. From Renon's meadows and larch and fir woods, the view stretches over the city of Bolzano, the Adige valley and, on clear days, the Dolomite peaks closing the horizon. Even today the plateau retains this vocation as a refuge from summer heat, combining quiet villages, trails and one of South Tyrol's most striking panoramas.

The Renon Cable Car and Historic Narrow-Gauge Train

The connection between Bolzano and the plateau is provided by the Renon cable car, which departs from the city and climbs in just a few minutes to Soprabolzano (Oberbozen), having replaced in 2009 the historic rack funicular inaugurated in 1907. From Soprabolzano, the historic Renon narrow-gauge train (Rittner Bahn) continues, a narrow-gauge railway in operation since 1907, crossing woods, meadows and the plateau's stations as far as Collalbo (Klobenstein), the line's terminus. The train, with its characteristic carriages, is today not only a means of transport but also a small tourist attraction, much loved by families and historic railway enthusiasts. The combined cable car and train route remains one of the most scenic ways to reach the plateau without a car, taking in scenery that changes rapidly with altitude.

The Earth Pyramids

Among the most photographed natural curiosities of Renon are the earth pyramids (Erdpyramiden), geological formations created by water erosion on moraine deposits: columns of earth and gravel that, protected at the top by a large boulder, resist erosion while the surrounding ground is gradually washed away. Several groups can be found across the plateau, among which those near Collalbo and towards Longomoso (Lengmoos) are among the best known and reachable with short walks along well-marked paths, in places aided by wooden walkways. The pyramids, some several metres tall, slowly change shape over the years as erosion continues its work, and represent a spectacular example of alpine geomorphology, a destination for easy walks suitable even for families with children, often included in the hiking routes that wind through Renon's woods and offer striking views in every season of the year.

Rittner Horn and the Dolomite Views

Rittner Horn (Corno del Renon), which at around 2,260 metres is the plateau's highest peak, is comfortably reached by chairlift from Collalbo, with no need for a long uphill walk. From the summit a 360-degree panorama opens up, spanning the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and Latemar Dolomite groups as far as the Sarentine Alps and, on the clearest days, well beyond, towards further peaks of the Dolomite range. In summer, Rittner Horn is a starting point for hikes and panoramic walks suited to different levels, many of them enjoyable with children, while in winter it turns into a small but well-loved ski area, with slopes for families and beginners. The combination of moderate altitude, easy access and Dolomite views makes Rittner Horn one of the plateau's best-loved destinations in every season of the year.

Holiday Villages and Trails of the Plateau

The Renon plateau is dotted with quiet villages that grew thanks to the holiday tradition: Soprabolzano (Oberbozen), with its historic hotels and views over the Bolzano basin, and Collalbo (Klobenstein), the plateau's main village and the train's terminus, where most services and shops are concentrated. Among the best-known trails is the Freud panoramic path, named after Sigmund Freud, who stayed on Renon several times, appreciating its quiet and mountain air away from the city. The network of walks, mostly easy and suitable for everyone, links the plateau's villages, woods and viewpoints, keeping alive Renon's vocation as a place of rest and holiday just minutes from Bolzano, yet with a pace and landscape entirely different from the city below, ideal for a slower, more relaxed kind of tourism.
