Rabbi in the Val di Rabbi and Stelvio National Park

Rabbi coincides entirely with the Val di Rabbi, a side valley of the Val di Sole that branches off from the main valley floor between Malé and Terzolas and climbs north-west for about ten kilometres, with a clear V-shaped profile, steep wooded slopes and a valley floor followed by the Rabbies torrent. The municipality is a scattered one: there is no single main village, but a set of hamlets strung along the valley, including Pracorno, further downstream, San Bernardo, which houses the town hall, Piazzola, at about 1,314 metres, and Rabbi Fonti, the innermost settlement. More than half of the municipal territory falls within the boundaries of Stelvio National Park, which here takes in conifer woods, wide pastures, alluvial fans and avalanche channels up to the higher elevations of the Cevedale Group, with the Sternai lakes and the peaks marking the border with the Val di Peio. This setting makes the Val di Rabbi one of the best preserved Alpine environments in the entire province of Trento.

The Terme di Rabbi and its Acidic Waters

At Rabbi Fonti flow the springs that made the valley famous: acidic, iron-rich waters, naturally sparkling due to their high carbon dioxide content and rich in iron, magnesium and trace elements. Their fame is not recent: as early as a 1660 letter, Sigismondo Ercole Thun noted his intention to travel to Rabbi to drink the water on a doctor's advice, while in 1777 the physician and naturalist Johann Heinrich Nepomuk von Crantz listed the springs of Rabbi among the healing waters of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, comparing them to the leading European thermal resorts. The waters flow directly from the rocks of the Cevedale Group, within the Trentino sector of Stelvio National Park, and are traditionally recommended for treating joint and rheumatic conditions, vascular and circulatory problems, ear-nose-throat and gastrointestinal disorders, and anaemic states. Still today, the Terme di Rabbi are the centrepiece of the valley's tourist offer, combining the tradition of drinking the waters with the natural setting that surrounds them.

The Saent Waterfalls and Hiking

Among the best-known hiking destinations in the valley are the Saent waterfalls, formed by the Rabbies torrent as it descends from the Sternai lakes at the foot of Cima di Saent, within Stelvio National Park. The most popular route starts from the Coler car park, at about 1,380 metres, and reaches Malga Stablasolo, at 1,539 metres, where the torrent forms a succession of falls split into a lower and an upper section; wooden walkways, steps and railings allow visitors to approach the main falls without losing the sense of the water's force, on a moderately difficult route accessible even to those with little hiking experience, well suited to a day trip especially between June and September. Continuing beyond the falls leads to the Pra di Saent, a high-altitude meadow often frequented by marmots, while those seeking more demanding routes can head on toward Lago Corvo or the Dorigoni mountain hut, in the upper part of the valley, amid glacial and high-mountain scenery.

Alpine Huts, Meadows and the Park Landscape

The landscape of the Val di Rabbi is defined by wide pastures, conifer woods and numerous alpine huts and farmsteads dotting the slopes, evidence of a still-active mountain economy. Among the best known and most visited huts are Malga Fratte, Malga Stablasolo, Malga Monte Sole, Malga Mondent and Malga Polinar, many of which offer summer dining service with dishes based on dairy products from cattle that spend the season on the high pastures. The Sentiero delle Malghe (Trail of the Alpine Huts) links several of these pastures, allowing visitors to discover ancient mountain settlements and their wood-and-stone architecture, while a nature trail equipped with informative panels near Rabbi Fonti tells the story of mountain wildlife and is also designed for families and children. In winter, the same wooded setting hosts the Centro Fondo Rabbi cross-country ski centre, at Al Plan, with tracks winding through the woods and along the Rabbies torrent within the boundaries of Stelvio National Park.

Traditions, Farming Culture and Experiences

The culture of the Val di Rabbi has its roots in a settlement process that took place between the 11th and 12th centuries by farmers from Malé, Terzolas and Caldes, while the autonomous municipality only took shape more recently, during the nineteenth century. The valley preserves its own dialect, Rabbiese, of Rhaeto-Romance stock and considered a particularly ancient and conservative Ladin variety. Transhumance remains central to local life and is celebrated every year with the Desmaglidô festival, on the third Sunday of September, marking the return of the cattle from the high pastures. A themed trail links the Segheria dei Braghje, at Rabbi Fonti, to the Segheria dei Bègoi, restored and still working: these are water-wheel sawmills of the Venetian type, introduced into the valley in the eighteenth century and able to turn logs into boards and beams using water power alone. At Pracorno, on the valley floor, the Molino Ruatti, a nineteenth-century water mill with its original machinery, is today a small museum of craft archaeology completing the picture of the valley's farming traditions.
