Prato allo Stelvio, gateway to the Stelvio Pass
Prato allo Stelvio, or Prad am Stilfserjoch in its German name, lies in the upper Val Venosta, the last side valley of western South Tyrol before the border with Lombardy and Switzerland. The village owes much of its fame to its strategic position: it is the starting point, on the South Tyrolean side, of the climb to the Stelvio Pass. For this reason Prato allo Stelvio is often described as the gateway to one of the most celebrated alpine passes in the world, a fixed stop for drivers, motorcyclists and cycling enthusiasts heading toward the roof of the eastern Alps. The village itself keeps a quiet, agricultural character, surrounded by orchards and meadows, and also serves as a convenient logistical base for visiting the Stelvio National Park or reaching the nearby mountain resorts of the area.
The Stelvio Pass and the high-altitude road
The Stelvio Pass reaches an altitude of 2,758 metres and is one of the highest road passes in the Alps, second in Italy only to the Colle dell'Agnello by a few metres. The road that starts from Prato allo Stelvio climbs through dozens of numbered hairpin bends, a route made famous by motoring magazines and international television programmes for its spectacular views and the technical driving skill it demands. In the warmer months the pass is a landmark for cyclists tackling one of the most iconic climbs in alpine cycling, as well as for motorcyclists and drivers seeking an extraordinary driving experience. The road remains closed during the winter months due to snow and avalanche risk and generally reopens in late spring, when the snow walls along the roadside can reach several metres in height.
The Stelvio National Park and the aquaprad centre
Prato allo Stelvio is one of the main seats of the Stelvio National Park, established in 1935 and today the largest alpine park in Italy, spanning South Tyrol, Trentino and Lombardy. The village is home to aquaprad, the nature visitor centre dedicated to the world of alpine waters: through interactive and exhibition trails, the centre tells the story of the mountain water cycle, from the glaciers of the Ortles to the streams of Val Venosta and the valley's historic irrigation channels. The centre is an ideal starting point for understanding the park's ecosystem before venturing onto the hiking trails that wind through woods, alpine pastures and high-altitude environments. The Stelvio National Park also protects a rich alpine fauna, including ibex, chamois and birds of prey, and is a reference point for scientific research on the alpine glacial environment.
The Ortles, Trafoi and Solda
Dominating the landscape above Prato allo Stelvio is the Ortles group, which at 3,905 metres is South Tyrol's highest peak and one of the most important glacial massifs in the eastern Alps. In the side valleys branching toward the massif lie the hamlets of Trafoi and nearby Solda, both well-known mountain sport resorts. In winter Trafoi and Solda offer alpine ski slopes with modern lifts and a ski area appreciated for its snow quality, while in summer they become starting bases for hikes, via ferratas and mountaineering toward the glacial peaks of the Ortles and the surrounding summits. The combination of high altitude, glaciers and mountain huts makes this area one of the classic mountaineering destinations of the whole of South Tyrol.
Orchards, the cycle path and hikes
While the high altitudes speak of glaciers and mountaineering, the valley floor around Prato allo Stelvio tells a different story, that of fruit growing: the extensive apple orchards surrounding the village are part of the typical agricultural landscape of Val Venosta, one of the most important apple-growing areas in Europe. The Val Venosta cycle path runs through the village, a flat and well-signposted route connecting several localities in the valley and allowing cyclists to ride among orchards, streams and small hamlets with limited elevation changes, suitable for families too. From Prato allo Stelvio hiking trails of varying difficulty also depart, ranging from gentle walks among the valley-floor orchards to more demanding routes toward the alpine pastures and mountain huts at the foot of the Ortles, offering a wide range of choices depending on available time and physical fitness.
