Novella in the Val di Non: Five Villages, One Municipality
Novella is a scattered municipality in the Val di Non, in the province of Trento, created on 1 January 2020 from the merger of the former municipalities of Brez, Cagnò, Cloz, Revò and Romallo, which today form its main hamlets alongside smaller settlements such as Arsio, Carnalez, Frari, Salobbi, Traversara and Tregiovo. The municipal seat is in Revò, yet the identity of the new municipality remains deeply tied to each individual village, each with its own church, square and traditions. The territory covers about 46 square kilometres, stretching between the mountain slopes to the north and the shores of Lake Santa Giustina to the south, across a landscape shaped by terraces planted with apple orchards and vineyards. The Novella stream, which crosses the valley and gives the municipality its name, has carved along its course the famous canyon that is today the area's main natural attraction, while the borders with Cles, Sarnonico and the other municipalities of the Val di Non place Novella at the centre of the wider Anaunia district.
The Rio Novella Canyon and the River Park
Novella's main attraction is the Parco Fluviale Novella, a nature trail that winds for about 3.5 kilometres along the gorges carved by the Novella stream between the hamlets of Romallo and Cloz, on the border with the neighbouring municipality of Dambel. Opened in 2005, the route takes roughly two hours on foot, starting from the San Biagio locality in the hamlet of Romallo and winding through apple orchards and woodland before reaching the heart of the canyon: here, more than 800 metres of metal walkways anchored to the rock allow visitors to walk in close contact with the cliff face, suspended above the water, among waterfalls, giant's kettles and narrow gorges carved into the rock over thousands of years. The park is typically open from mid-April to mid-November. For a different experience, the Rio Novella gorges can also be paddled upstream by kayak, setting off from the waters of Lake Santa Giustina, on a route that alternates open paddling stretches with narrower passages between the rock walls.
Orchards and Vineyards: Val di Non DOP Apples and Groppello Wine
The agricultural landscape of Novella is dominated by apple orchards, which cover the terraced slopes and the valley floor with long, orderly rows of fruit trees. The municipality lies within the production area of the Val di Non DOP apple, reserved for the Golden Delicious, Renetta Canada and Red Delicious varieties, grown between 450 and 900 metres above sea level in a microclimate combining marked temperature swings with well-drained soils, conditions considered among the most favourable in the world for apple growing. Alongside apples, Novella also grows grapes: on the gravelly slopes running down to the shores of Lake Santa Giustina, Groppello, a red grape variety, finds its ideal terrain, yielding a light, fruity wine traditionally associated with this part of the Val di Non. The contrast between the neat expanses of orchards and the small vineyard plots tells the story of a mountain agriculture that has adapted to different altitudes and slopes, remaining the area's main economic driver.
Lake Santa Giustina: Water, Gorges and Sport
South of the municipal territory lies Lake Santa Giustina, the largest artificial reservoir in Trentino, created by damming the Noce river with a 150-metre-high dam built between 1946 and 1949, the most imposing in Europe at the time. The lake's waters feed the Taio hydroelectric power plant and shape a broad, ever-changing landscape that narrows into the numerous side gorges carved by tributary streams, including those of the Rio Novella and the Rio Banco. Over the years, the lake's shores and inlets have become a destination for water sports: canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding allow visitors to explore the gorges from an unusual vantage point, paddling upstream through narrow stretches between rock walls that rise sheer above the water. The lakeside landscape, together with the surrounding woods, also offers scenic viewpoints and walking or cycling routes along the shores, set within a natural context that blends with the rural fabric of the surrounding orchards.
History and Villages: from Castles to Hermitages
Each of the five villages that came together to form Novella preserves its own traces of a rural and religious history rooted in the Middle Ages. Below the village of Cagnò stand the remains of the old Castellazio, a fortification that belonged to the Cagnou family, documented between the 11th and 13th centuries. In Romallo, perched on a rocky spur surrounded by gorges, stands the Hermitage of San Biagio, which houses frescoes and altarpieces and also marks the starting point of the canyon trail. Revò, seat of the new municipality, is home to the parish church of Santo Stefano Protomartire, built in late-Gothic forms in the 16th century, as the date 1519 on the portal attests, and to the church of the Beata Vergine Maria del Monte Carmelo, recorded as early as 1309. In Cloz, mills dating back to the 14th century can still be seen, alongside the church of Santa Maria with its late-Gothic frescoes. This scattered heritage makes up the identity of a municipality that is young in its administrative form but ancient in substance.
