Nogaredo की कहानी

Nogaredo in the Vallagarina, on the Right Bank of the Adige

Nogaredo lies in the Vallagarina, the valley carved by the Adige between Trento and Verona, a few kilometres south of Rovereto, on the river's right bank. The municipality covers a relatively small but varied territory, rising gently from the valley floor, crossed by the state road and the Brenner railway line, toward the first hilly ridges covered with vineyards and woods. The main town, gathered around the parish church of San Leonardo and Palazzo Candelpergher, seat of the town hall, connects with the hamlets scattered across the surrounding countryside. Its position along one of the historic routes linking the Germanic world to the Mediterranean has always made Nogaredo a place of passage and exchange, a factor that has deeply shaped its history, its rural economy and even the darkest judicial episodes tied to nearby Castel Noarna.

Castel Noarna and the Witch Trial

The most famous monument in Nogaredo is Castel Noarna, a manor whose origins date back to the eleventh century, first mentioned in a document of 1189. Passed from the Castelnuovo family to the Castelbarco and, from 1456, to the powerful counts of Lodron, who held it for more than four hundred years, the castle is sadly notorious for having hosted, in 1646-1647, one of the harshest witch trials in Trentino's history: eight women, imprisoned and tortured in the manor's cells, were sentenced to death and executed in nearby Brancolino, while the only male defendant died in prison. In the eighteenth century, the Rovereto scholar Girolamo Tartarotti revisited those events to denounce their groundlessness. Today the castle, home since 1974 to an organic winery run by the Zani family, opens to the public on special occasions, including the Calendimaggio, the festival that each year recalls the memory of the witches of Nogaredo.

Marzemino and the Vineyards of Nogaredo

Nogaredo lies at the heart of the Marzemino production area, the red grape variety that made the Vallagarina famous worldwide thanks to Mozart's Don Giovanni, where the protagonist exclaims, "Pour the wine! Excellent Marzemino!" The vineyards spread across the sunny slopes rising from the valley floor toward the hillside hamlets, in an agricultural landscape that shares features and traditions with nearby Isera, home to the Casa del Vino della Vallagarina and, for centuries, the variety's elected homeland. Marzemino from Nogaredo yields wines of deep ruby colour, soft and fragrant, often also vinified in a lightly sparkling version that enhances its drinkability. Alongside traditional viticulture, recent decades have also seen the rise of organic production, such as that of the winery now based right at Castel Noarna, a sign of continuity between the manor's history and the territory's winemaking vocation.

The Hamlets, Between Hills and Countryside

The municipal territory of Nogaredo is made up of the main town and four principal hamlets, Noarna, Sasso, Brancolino and Molini, together with the small hamlet of Santa Lucia, the village's patron saint. Noarna, which gives its name to the famous castle, preserves the church of San Valentino and rural houses gathered around the manor; Sasso, with the church of San Matteo Apostolo, sits at a higher elevation, among woods and meadows; Brancolino, where tradition holds the women condemned in the witch trial were executed, is home to the church of the Beata Vergine Maria. This mosaic of small settlements, linked by country roads that cross vineyards and small woods, conveys the image of a still-intact rural landscape, where farming life marks the rhythm of the seasons and where walks between one hamlet and another reveal little-visited corners of the Vallagarina.

History and Experiences to Live

The earliest written records of Nogaredo date back to the eleventh century, but it was from 1456, with the arrival of the counts of Lodron, that the village took on a significant role in the Vallagarina, remaining under their control until 1703. The municipality, suppressed in 1929 and reconstituted in 1955, has kept a strong agricultural and winemaking identity over time, evidenced by Palazzo Lodron in the main town and by the many small wineries scattered across the territory. Every year the Calendimaggio draws visitors with costumed re-enactments, medieval games and the Comun Comunale, a competition involving seven communities of the valley, together with the special opening of Palazzo Lodron. Between a visit to Castel Noarna, a Marzemino tasting at a winery and a walk among the hamlets, Nogaredo offers visitors an authentic experience, able to weave together history, wine and landscape in a territory still on a human scale.
