The village at the foot of the Sciliar
Fiè allo Sciliar sits on a sunny terrace overlooking Val Gardena and the Isarco Valley, dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of the Sciliar, one of the most recognisable symbols of the Dolomites. The historic centre retains the typical character of South Tyrolean villages, with stone-and-wood houses, frescoed arcades and the parish church facing the main square. All around lie traditional farmsteads, apple orchards and spruce forests, making the landscape ideal for long walks even outside the peak season. Fiè belongs to the Alpe di Siusi area and has always been a reference point for travellers seeking authentic alpine tourism, away from the crowds of larger resorts. Its strategic position, just a few kilometres from Bolzano and Castelrotto, makes it a convenient base for exploring the whole Sciliar area, among mountain refuges, panoramic trails and small museums devoted to local farming culture.
The Alpe di Siusi and the UNESCO Dolomites
From Fiè allo Sciliar it is easy to reach the Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-altitude alpine plateau in Europe and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The natural heat generated by fermentation promotes muscle relaxation and is traditionally associated with benefits for circulation and the respiratory system. Prösels Castle and hiking
A short distance from the centre of Fiè stands Prösels Castle, in German Schloss Prösels, one of the most imposing and best-preserved Renaissance castles in South Tyrol. Enlarged in the 16th century by the von Völs family, the manor preserves frescoed halls, a chapel and a large inner courtyard, and can be visited through guided tours that recount its history and the legends tied to the Sciliar area. Besides the castle, the area around Fiè offers a wide choice of hikes for every level: from easier paths towards the Fiè lake and the surrounding farmsteads, to more demanding routes climbing towards the Bolzano Refuge and the summit of the Sciliar. Numerous itineraries connect the village to the Alpe di Siusi, allowing visitors to combine culture, history and nature in a single holiday, with traditional resting points along the way to sample typical South Tyrolean dishes.
