Carano lies on a well-exposed slope of Val di Fiemme, the Dolomite valley that stretches between Passo di San Lugano and Predazzo, framed to the north by the Latemar group and to the south by the Lagorai ridges. The village sits a few kilometres from Cavalese, the valley's main town, and borders the settlements of Daiano and Varena, with which it shares landscape and traditions.
