Aldino की कहानी

Aldino on the Monte Regolo Plateau, in the Bassa Atesina

Aldino lies in the southern part of South Tyrol, in the Bassa Atesina (Unterland) area, set on the Monte Regolo plateau at an altitude between 1,160 and 1,225 metres, between the municipalities of Ora, Bronzolo and Nova Ponente. The municipal territory, covering more than 62 square kilometres, includes the main village and the historic hamlet of Redagno (Radein), lying at about 1,550 metres and separated from Aldino by the deep gorge of the Rio delle Foglie. With around 1,600 inhabitants, the vast majority German-speaking, Aldino keeps an identity strongly tied to the German-speaking tradition of South Tyrol, while remaining administratively part of the autonomous province of Bolzano-South Tyrol and maintaining, as is local practice, dual Italian and German place names. Its position on the plateau, away from the main valley roads, has kept Aldino a relatively secluded and well-preserved place, valued for its quiet atmosphere and still strongly rural landscape.

The Bletterbach Geopark, a UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage Site

Aldino's best-known attraction is the Bletterbach Geopark, established in 2005 by the municipality and recognised as part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site. The gorge of the Rio delle Foglie, about eight kilometres long and up to four hundred metres deep, stretches from the main village to Redagno, cutting through the plateau's rock and exposing a geological cross-section spanning roughly 250 million years, from the Upper Permian to the Middle Triassic. At the base, dark volcanic rocks emerge, while higher up reddish sandstones were deposited in an arid tropical environment during the transgression and regression phases of the ancient Permian sea. The canyon also preserves fossil remains of reptiles, amphibians, ammonites and plants, making it one of the most important Permian deposits in the world. Sixteen information panels along the route explain the rock layers at the most significant points, while the visitor centre in Aldino and the geological museum in Redagno offer alternative starting points for exploring the gorge.

Corno Bianco and the Oclini Plateau

Above the hamlet of Redagno rise the twin peaks of Corno Bianco (Weisshorn), at 2,317 metres, and Corno Nero, at 2,439 metres, separated by the Oclini Pass and facing the neighbouring Monte Corno Nature Park. From the village of Redagno, about an hour's walk leads to the summit of Corno Bianco, opening onto a wide panorama over the Dolomite groups of the Latemar, Catinaccio and Sciliar, as well as the Pietralba Sanctuary visible below in the valley. The network of trails branching out from the plateau links the high-altitude pastures to the alpine huts active in the warmer months, offering routes of varying difficulty suited both to those seeking a short walk and to those tackling more demanding crossings toward the Oclini Pass and the surrounding mountains. The proximity to the Bletterbach also makes it possible to combine, in a single day, a high-altitude hike with a visit to the canyon below.

Woods, Pastures and the Plateau Landscape

The landscape of Aldino is dominated by extensive coniferous woods covering the slopes of the Monte Regolo plateau, alternating with pastures and hay meadows surrounding the farmsteads scattered across the territory. This mosaic of woodland and clearings, typical of South Tyrol's mid-mountain areas, is home to widespread alpine wildlife and offers ideal conditions for extensive livestock farming, the basis of the local cheesemaking tradition. The alpine huts active on the slopes of Corno Bianco produce mountain cheeses from the milk of animals that graze freely in summer, with organoleptic qualities directly linked to the grass and herbs of the plateau. The Bletterbach gorge, cutting deep into this gentle, rolling landscape, introduces an element of geological drama that contrasts with the calm of the pastures above, making the municipal territory a compendium of the different souls of the South Tyrolean landscape, from rocky mountain to alpine countryside.

History, Farming Tradition and Border Identity

Aldino is first documented in 1175 as Aldinum, and in 1185 under the name Alden; local history preserves a well-known episode from 1351, when the farmers of Aldino and Redagno successfully resisted the official Oswald von Villanders, who demanded transport services toward Montagna, by producing a document from Count Heinrich, first husband of the Tyrolean princess Margarete Maultasch, exempting them from that obligation. Under Fascism the village was renamed Valdagno di Trento in 1928 and Aldagno in 1940, recovering its traditional name only in 1955. The Church of the Invention of the Holy Cross, first mentioned in 1309 but with twelfth-century Romanesque foundations uncovered during the 1985 restoration, holds much of the village's religious memory, becoming an independent parish only in 1896. The local civic museum, with Baroque and Rococo works and period farming tools, and the geological museum in Redagno complete a picture in which farming history and geological memory closely intertwine.
