Introduction and location
Stazzema lies inland from Versilia, in the province of Lucca, at the foot of the Apuan Alps, the mountain range separating the Tyrrhenian coast from the Garfagnana valley. The municipality has no single compact centre, but rather many hamlets scattered across valleys and ridges, between four hundred and a thousand metres of altitude. This scattered layout reflects a history of small mountain villages long shaped by sheep farming, chestnuts and marble quarries, now rediscovered by travellers seeking slow tourism, wide-open views and mountain air only a short drive from the sea.
History and origins
The origins of Stazzema go back to the Middle Ages, when its hamlets grew as small farming and pastoral settlements linked to control of the Apennine passes towards the Garfagnana valley. For centuries the local economy revolved around livestock, chestnut cultivation and, in hamlets such as Levigliani and Terrinca, marble extraction from the Apuan quarries. The most tragic and best-known chapter in the municipality's history is 12 August 1944, when the hamlet of Sant'Anna di Stazzema became the site of one of the gravest massacres of civilians committed by Nazi troops in Italy during the Second World War, an event that has deeply shaped the village's identity.
Nature and landscape
Most of the Stazzema municipality lies within the Apuan Alps Regional Park, an environment of steep limestone ridges, rocky cliffs, chestnut and beech woods, and karst formations of great natural interest. Among the best-known landscape features is Monte Forato, a rocky ridge pierced by a large natural arch visible from afar, a classic destination for hikers in the area. The slopes are crossed by trails linking the hamlets to the higher ridgelines, offering views that stretch from the Apuan peaks to the Versilia coastline and, on clear days, out to the Tuscan sea.

Visitors to Stazzema can enjoy trekking along the many trails of the Apuan Alps Park, suited both to experienced hikers and to those seeking shorter walks between the hamlets. Sant'Anna di Stazzema is home to the Historical Museum of the Resistance, dedicated to the memory of the 1944 massacre and set within the National Peace Park, a place of reflection visited every year by schools and official delegations. It is also worth exploring small stone hamlets such as Pomezzana, Cardoso, Ruosina and Terrinca, each with its own church and rural layout, to experience the authentic atmosphere of the Versilia mountains.
Flavours and traditions
The cuisine of Stazzema reflects its mountain vocation: chestnuts and chestnut flour have long been the basis of local dishes such as necci, alongside traditional desserts and polenta, while the woods yield seasonal porcini mushrooms much prized by locals. Mountain pecorino cheese and honey produced in the higher hamlets are also part of the table, together with cured meats typical of inland Tuscany. The historic economy linked to marble quarrying in the Apuan Alps, especially around Levigliani, remains part of the area's identity, still recalled through age-old working practices told in the villages.
