Introduction and location
Pescia lies in the province of Pistoia, in western Tuscany, within the Valdinievole area, a transitional zone between the Pistoia hills and the plain that opens toward Lucca. The Pescia stream runs through the town, historically splitting the settlement into two parts that were once separate municipalities before merging into a single centre. Its position, close to Montecatini Terme and Lucca, made Pescia an important trading hub since the Middle Ages, favoured by abundant water and the fertility of the surrounding land.
History and origins
Pescia's origins date back to Roman and early medieval times, but it was in the late Middle Ages that the town gained real importance, long contested between Lucca and Florence before coming firmly under Florentine rule. Later a bishopric, it developed its own civic identity, reflected in the Palazzo dei Vicari, the historic seat of local government, and in a rich religious heritage linked to an early Franciscan presence dating back to the thirteenth century. Over the centuries, farming and trade gradually became the main drivers of the local economy alongside civic administration.
Nature and landscape
The landscape around Pescia tells the story of its own development: hills planted with olive groves and vineyards slope down toward the Valdinievole plain, while nurseries that made the area famous across Italy and abroad stretch along the watercourses. Greenhouses and fields devoted to flower growing alternate with woodland and wilder glimpses toward the higher ground, in a balance typical of the Tuscan countryside. Pescia's cuisine reflects the area's agricultural vocation, with local green asparagus, awarded IGP status, taking centre stage in simple, seasonal dishes. Alongside garden produce, extra virgin olive oil from the surrounding hills and local wines complete a table shaped by the rhythm of the seasons.
