Introduction and location
Monte San Savino stands on a hilltop in the Arezzo Valdichiana, in southern Tuscany, not far from the border with Umbria. The town overlooks a wide stretch of cultivated plain, among vineyards, olive groves and fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Its elevated position brings a mild climate and views ranging from the Chianti hills to the Apennine mountains. Well connected by the old Via Cassia and by rail, the village makes an ideal base for exploring the Valdichiana, between Arezzo, Cortona and the area's other towns.
History and origins
The origins of Monte San Savino date back to the medieval period, when the village grew as a fortified outpost controlling the routes crossing the Valdichiana. Fought over for centuries by Arezzo, Siena and Florence, it eventually came under Florentine rule, which shaped much of its present urban layout. Between the 15th and 16th centuries the town enjoyed a flourishing artistic season, linked also to local craftsmen and artists, including the Renaissance sculptor Andrea Sansovino, born here. The architecture of the historic centre still tells the story of this contested and thriving past.
