Chiusdino stands on a hill about 30 kilometres from Siena, in the heart of the Val di Merse, a transitional area between the Montagnola Senese and the Colline Metallifere. History and origins
Chiusdino's origins date back to the early Middle Ages, when the village grew as a fortified centre along the routes linking southern Tuscany to Siena. Its name is inseparably tied to Saint Galgano Guidotti, a twelfth-century knight born here who, after a worldly youth, chose a life of spiritual retreat on the nearby hill of Montesiepi. The saint's cult, together with the important abbey later built in his honour, turned Chiusdino into a small but significant religious and political landmark in medieval Tuscany, under the influence of the Republic of Siena.
Nature and landscape
The municipal territory of Chiusdino is largely covered by chestnut, oak and holm oak woods typical of the Val di Merse, an area that remained isolated for a long time and is therefore well preserved from an environmental point of view. The Merse river and the Farma stream flow through the surrounding valleys, feeding lush vegetation and offering glimpses of untouched nature. Along the course of the Farma, natural hot springs also emerge, which have attracted visitors for centuries in search of relaxation immersed in greenery, far from traffic and mass tourism.
