L'histoire de Villa Bartolomea
Along the Adige river
The territory of Villa Bartolomea runs along the Adige embankment, which also marks the border with the province of Mantua. For centuries the river shaped the layout of the area, through periodic flooding and subsequent embankment works, and today it remains a landscape feature that accompanies travel along the riverside roads.
Land reclamation and agriculture
Like other towns of the Bassa Veronese, Villa Bartolomea owes much of its arable land to reclamation works carried out between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The fields, now given over mainly to cereals and forage crops, are crossed by a network of drainage canals that still regulates the flow of water.
The rural hamlets
The municipality includes several small hamlets, organised around parish churches and historic farming settlements. These minor centres retain a pronounced rural character, with farm courtyards and outbuildings scattered across the surrounding countryside.
An area still off the tourist trail
Unlike other parts of the province of Verona, the Bassa Veronese and Villa Bartolomea in particular remain on the margins of the main tourist routes, even though they offer a genuine rural landscape and the chance to walk or cycle along the Adige embankments away from traffic.
