A Municipality Between Two Valleys

The municipality of Valli del Pasubio arose from the union of two historically distinct entities: the Valle dei Signori, on the right bank of the Leogra stream, and the Valle dei Conti, on the left. After the fall of the Republic of Venice, the two territories were unified during the Napoleonic period under the name Valli dei Signori, giving rise to today's municipality, now home to just over three thousand people. The elongated shape of the territory, wedged between mountain slopes, still reflects this dual origin.

Monte Pasubio and the Memory of the Great War

The Pasubio massif was the scene of some of the harshest battles of the First World War on the alpine front, contested between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies between 1916 and 1918. The mountain's peaks and slopes still preserve a dense network of trenches, communication trenches, tunnels, and military positions, including the famous Dente Italiano and Dente Austriaco, separated by just a few meters and the scene of fierce fighting. The area is today a protected monumental zone, maintained to keep the memory of those events alive.

The Strada delle 52 Gallerie

The best-known route on the Pasubio is the Strada delle 52 Gallerie, a military mule track carved into the rock on the mountain's southern slope, built by the Italian army in just nine months to allow movement sheltered from enemy fire between the valley floor and the high-altitude positions. The route, which takes its name from the 52 tunnels cut into the rock, is today one of the best-known hiking routes in the Veneto, walkable on foot and, in some stretches, by mountain bike, and it draws visitors interested in both alpine scenery and twentieth-century military history.

The Piccole Dolomiti

Valli del Pasubio is also one of the gateways to the Piccole Dolomiti, the mountain group that includes limestone peaks such as Cima Carega and offers striking alpine scenery despite relatively modest elevations compared to the main Dolomites. Mountain huts and high-altitude trails connect the municipal territory to other valleys in the Vicenza and Trento areas, making it a destination for hikers and mountaineers in every season.

Valley Life and Mountain Tourism

Beyond its military history and Dolomite-like scenery, Valli del Pasubio maintains an economy tied to pastoral farming, forestry, and mountain tourism oriented toward summer hiking and, to a lesser extent, winter sports. The small settlements that make up the municipality retain simple mountain architecture, in a quiet setting far from the major alpine tourist centers.
