History and origins

Spresiano's history is bound to its position along the Piave, a crossing point since Roman times. In the Middle Ages the area was marked by small rural churches, including the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità, whose origins date to the twelfth century. In later centuries the town followed the fortunes of the Republic of Venice, which had several patrician villas built here as country residences. The twentieth century brought the tragic events of the First World War: after the defeat at Caporetto, the front line settled along the Piave, and the bridges of the area, including the one near Ponte della Priula, were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, leaving a deep mark on local memory.

What to see

The main architectural landmark is Villa Giustiniani Recanati, the finest example of a Venetian villa in the municipality, with a three-storey main building, a balustraded serliana on the piano nobile and a large tree-lined park laid out with geometric hedges. Among the religious buildings worth a visit are the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità, the main parish church in the town centre and the church in the hamlet of Lovadina. Travelling north, by bike or by car, visitors can quickly reach Susegana to admire the Castello di San Salvatore, which overlooks the Piave valley from its hilltop.

Nature nearby: the Piave and the Grave di Papadopoli

The Grave di Papadopoli are a river island formed by the Piave after an 1882 flood, shared between the municipalities of Spresiano, Cimadolmo and Maserada sul Piave. Today it is a striking natural area, with paths winding through meadows, gravel banks and vineyards, popular with those looking for a walk or a bike ride away from traffic. The Tradotta Montebelluna-Nervesa della Battaglia cycle route also runs along the riverbank, a roughly sixteen-kilometre path crossing several local municipalities, its name recalling the train transports that carried troops during the First World War.

Local life and economy

Spresiano's economy combines agriculture, with crops typical of the Treviso plain, and a network of small and medium manufacturing and craft businesses. Proximity to Treviso and Conegliano provides jobs and services, while the town retains a character still tied to the rhythms of the countryside, marked by weekly markets and village festivals throughout the year.

How to get there and location

Spresiano lies along the state road connecting Treviso and Conegliano, about fifteen kilometres from Treviso, and has its own railway station on the Treviso-Conegliano-Udine line. Its position, halfway between the city of Treviso and the Prosecco hills, makes it a convenient base for visiting both areas away from the tourist crowds.
