L'histoire de Santa Giustina
Between the Piave and the Prealps
The municipal territory of Santa Giustina extends through the lower Valbelluna, between the course of the Piave and the first foothills of the Belluno Prealps, in a landscape of transition between cultivated plain and mountain. The hamlets, scattered across the slopes and the valley floor, offer different views of the river and the surrounding peaks, including the Pizzocco massif to the south.
The parish church
The parish church of Santa Giustina was built in the second half of the eighteenth century and completed in 1791. Inside it holds paintings attributed to the school of Beato Angelico and works by the painter Fringimelica. The hamlets contain other, older churches and chapels, such as that of San Mauro near Cergnai, which offers a wide panorama over the valley.
The Venetian villas
Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries several families had manor houses built within the municipal territory. Villa Bonsembiante at Colvago hosted the playwright Carlo Goldoni between 1728 and 1729, a period in which he wrote some of his early theatrical works there. Villa Villabruna at Cassol and Villa Norcen at Dussan are other notable examples of the manor architecture of the Feltre and Belluno area.
Nature: Valle Scura and the Via dell'Acqua
On the southern slope of Monte Pizzocco lies the Valle Scura nature reserve, an almost untouched environment crossed by hiking trails. The Via dell'Acqua instead connects the Piave to the Pizzocco following the course of the Veses stream, from the mill of Santa Libera to the hostel of Altanon, passing historic mills and views of the stream.
The castle of Zumelle nearby
A short distance from Santa Giustina, in the neighbouring municipality of Mel, stands the castle of Zumelle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications of the Valbelluna. Of early medieval origin and reworked several times over the centuries, it can be visited today and is among the most popular destinations for those exploring this part of the province of Belluno.
Agriculture and traditions
The economy of Santa Giustina has remained tied to the countryside, with typical crops such as potatoes, sponcio corn, barley, pumpkin, chestnuts and apples. Every year, on the first weekend of October, the Mostra Mercato delle attività agricole, artigianali e commerciali brings together local producers and visitors, offering a chance to discover the products of the area.
