History and origins

The name Rubano probably derives from the Latin prediale Rubianus, the estate of a certain Rubius, perhaps a Roman legionary who was granted land here in ancient times. No certain historical sources survive from that period, only a handful of archaeological remains of rural dwellings dating to the first or second century AD. The earliest documented references to the territory date from the Middle Ages: the place name Sarmeola appears in a deed of 1026, Rubano in 1073, Villaguattera in 1191 and Bosco toward the end of the thirteenth century. From then on the municipality developed slowly as an agricultural satellite of Padua, until the strong residential and commercial expansion of the second half of the twentieth century.

What to see

The most significant monument is the Casa del Petrarca, a thirteenth century building that was the residence of the poet and his family, altered in the sixteenth century into the Renaissance appearance still visible today; it is managed by the municipality and open to the public. The historic centre also holds the old church of Rubano, dating from the end of the thirteenth century and now deconsecrated: it is probably the oldest building in the area to survive in recognisable form, now home to the municipal auditorium. These are minor sights that can be visited in a few hours, but they offer a genuine glimpse of local history beyond the town's recent urban growth.

Nature and local life

The Parco Etnografico, laid out around a lake of more than ten hectares, is the place most loved by residents for a walk or a moment outdoors. Inside it are a teaching farm, a reconstructed casone veneto (a traditional Po Valley rural dwelling) and a small ethnographic museum displaying the furniture typical of the local peasant tradition. It is a park designed with families in mind, with accessible paths and a good balance of greenery and water, and it offers the natural counterpoint to an otherwise heavily urbanised municipality.

Economy and proximity to Padua

Rubano is nowadays known chiefly for its commercial character: over the years, distribution centres and neighbourhood businesses have settled along the roads connecting the municipality to Padua, making it a shopping hub for the city's western area. Its proximity to Padua, reachable within minutes, allows visitors staying here to enjoy a quiet residential setting while still having easy access to Padua's UNESCO listed historic centre, with its frescoes, squares and the Basilica of the Saint.

Getting there

Rubano is easily reached by car from Padua's western ring road or from the A4 motorway at the Padova Ovest exit; the city centre is only a few kilometres away, whether by car or by local public transport connections. As the town has no railway station of its own, the most practical option remains driving or taking the urban buses that link the municipality to the provincial capital.
