Le récit
L'histoire de Riese Pio X
The village of Giuseppe Sarto
Riese Pio X, simply Riese until 1951, took its name from its most celebrated citizen in his honour. Giuseppe Sarto was born here on 2 June 1835 into a family of modest means and was baptised the following day in the village's parish church. From that rural childhood, amid the fields of the Treviso plain, Sarto's path led him to become Patriarch of Venice and then, in 1903, pope under the name Pius X. He was canonised in 1954, and Riese has since preserved his legacy as an integral part of the village's identity.
The Casa Natale
The Casa Natale di San Pio X is an eighteenth century building that came to the Sarto family through the future pope's maternal grandmother. It was donated to the municipality of Riese in 1926 by Anna Sarto, the pontiff's sister, and has remained largely unchanged since, with original furnishings arranged to recreate the small rural world in which the future saint spent his early years. The house, familiarly called the casetta, is now open to visitors and serves as the starting point for anyone wishing to understand the humble origins of one of the twentieth century's most significant popes.
The Santuario delle Cendrole
The Santuario di Maria Assunta delle Cendrole is the oldest church in the surrounding area, rebuilt in its present form in the eighteenth century to a design by architect Ottavio Scotti. Giuseppe Sarto visited it throughout his life, as a child, a seminarian, a priest and finally a bishop, often reaching it on foot along the Sentiero del Curiotto, a path through the countryside connecting the sanctuary to the centre of Riese. Retracing that route today means walking through the same places that shaped the future pontiff's spiritual formation.
The Treviso plain around Riese
Beyond the sites linked to Pius X, Riese retains the character of a farming municipality of the Treviso plain, with cultivated fields, small rural farmsteads and a fabric of neighbouring villages bound together by a long agricultural tradition. It is a territory best visited unhurriedly, moving between the countryside and smaller historic centres, in an area of the province of Treviso less frequented by tourist flows yet rich in authentic rural and religious heritage.
