The origins of the town

Ormelle's origins probably date back to Roman times, but the territory was depopulated during the barbarian invasions and after the destruction of nearby Oderzo. It was only after the year 1000, with the revival of agriculture across the Marca Trevigiana, that the area was resettled and the first communities of Ormelle and Roncadelle took shape, although the first document officially attesting to their existence dates only to 1193. Since then the town has grown around its farming vocation, in a constant relationship with the nearby Piave river, which over the centuries repeatedly flooded, shaping both the land and the life of the communities that lived on it.

The Templar church at Tempio

In the hamlet that significantly bears the name Tempio, at the end of the twelfth century the Knights Templar founded a mansio, a religious-military outpost along an ancient overland route that led pilgrims toward Jerusalem, at its crossing with the Via Postumia. They also built a church dedicated to Saint Mary, now perfectly preserved and the only surviving trace of the original complex. After the suppression of the Templar order in 1312, the site passed to the Knights of Malta, who held it for about four hundred years, turning it from a pilgrims' hospice into an agricultural property. The current building, with its single nave and Romanesque portico, remains one of the most historically significant sites in the whole eastern Treviso plain.

The Piave and the alluvial territory

The Piave river flows along the edges of the municipality and has profoundly shaped the nature of the soil, alluvial in origin due to the many floods that have occurred over the centuries. This close and not always easy relationship with the river has left its mark not only on the composition of the land, particularly well suited to farming, but also on local memory and tradition. Walking or cycling along the Piave's banks offers a close look at a river that has deeply marked the history of the Veneto, not only for its agricultural role but also, a little further upstream, for the events of the First World War that made it famous as the Sacred River to the Homeland.

Farming and winemaking tradition

Ormelle's economy today remains tied mainly to farming and livestock, with crops typical of the Treviso plain covering much of the municipal territory. There is also a notable winemaking component, reflected in the town's membership of the national Città del Vino association, which brings together Italian municipalities with a productive tradition tied to viticulture. Local farms, often family-run, keep this vocation alive, occasionally offering direct sales and small tastings. It is small-scale but deeply rooted agriculture, which fits well with the discreet, hard-working character of this corner of the Veneto plain.

The hamlets and life in the town

Besides the main town, the municipality of Ormelle includes the hamlets of Roncadelle and Tempio, each with its own identity and small parish church. With just over four thousand residents, Ormelle retains the character of a cohesive rural community, where daily life revolves around the fields, the school, the parish and local associations. There are no major commercial or hospitality attractions, but this very simplicity offers a genuine glimpse of the province of Treviso, away from the more touristy centers of the Prosecco area or the coast, and closer to the authentic rhythm of country life.
