Le récit
L'histoire de Meolo
Between the Sile and the Piave
The municipal territory extends across the plain between the Sile and Piave rivers, in a position bordering the province of Treviso. The landscape is typical of the low Venetian plain, with cultivated fields and waterways marking out the territory.
From prehistoric origins to the Palaeo-Venetians
The name Meolo is thought to derive from Medulum, an ancient rise of land that emerged among marshes now reclaimed. Archaeological finds in the municipal territory indicate human presence as early as the Mesolithic period, with further traces of activity in the Neolithic and Palaeo-Venetian eras.
The golden age of Venetian villas
Thanks to its proximity to Venice and the ease of river and lagoon communications, numerous noble Venetian families bought land in Meolo and built their country residences, whose façades are still reflected today along the river that runs through the town.
The memory of the First World War
After the retreat of Caporetto in November 1917, the Piave became the front line between the Italian army and the Austro-Hungarian forces, and the entire lower Piave area, including Meolo's territory, was marked by the war until the conflict ended in 1918.
An agricultural land between two provinces
Today Meolo retains a mainly agricultural and residential economy, in a border position between the provinces of Venice and Treviso that has always shaped its economic and social life, oriented both towards the lagoon and towards the Treviso hinterland.
