L'histoire de Codognè
Between the plain and the Prosecco hills
Codognè occupies a stretch of plain close to the first Treviso hills, in a position that places it naturally along the routes connecting Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto to the Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene wine area. The municipal territory is largely agricultural, with cultivated fields alternating with rows of vines, and it retains a rural character largely untouched by mass tourism.
Medieval origins and Benedictine presence
The village's name derives from the Latin cotoneum, quince, with the collective suffix -etum, probably indicating an area once cultivated with quince trees. In the Middle Ages Codognè was an important centre for the Benedictine order, which had a significant influence on the organisation of the territory and local religious life.
The Venetian villas of the area
Several eighteenth-century Venetian villas stand within the municipal territory, evidence of noble families who chose this countryside for their summer residences: Villa Tofanelli, Villa Paoletti at Cimetta, Villa Porcia Andreetta Dell'Andrea, known as Rosa, at Roverbasso, Villa Toderini and Villa Travaini. These are private buildings, but visible from the outside, forming a landscape typical of the Venetian countryside villa tradition.
The church of San Giovanni Battista
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is the main religious and architectural landmark of the town centre, a representative example of sacred architecture in the Treviso plain and a meeting point for the local community over the centuries.
Agricultural vocation and Prosecco
Codognè's economy remains tied to agriculture and, in particular, to viticulture for Prosecco production, which here stands alongside the plain's traditional crops. The historic San Biagio fair, held every February, is the town's most deeply rooted agricultural and trade event.
