Between Mainland and Lagoon
Codevigo occupies a hinge position between the Padua plain and Venice's southern lagoon. The municipal territory has been shaped by centuries of land reclamation, which turned marshland into farmland while leaving some significant wetland areas intact, now among the most interesting environments of the area.
Fish Valleys and Valle Millecampi
Adjacent to Codevigo's territory lies Valle Millecampi, one of the fish valleys of Venice's southern lagoon, a transitional environment between fresh and brackish water important for migratory birdlife. These fish valleys, historically managed for extensive fish farming, are a distinctive feature of the southern lagoon landscape and an opportunity to observe an ecosystem quite different from Venice's urban core.
Land Reclamation and Agricultural Landscape
Codevigo's history is closely tied to hydraulic reclamation works that, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, made large portions of previously marshy territory arable. Canals, pumping stations, and embankments still characterize the landscape today, alongside grain and vegetable farming typical of the southern Padua lowlands.
Proximity to the WWF Valle Averto Oasis
Just beyond the municipal border, in the territory of Campagna Lupia, lies the WWF Valle Averto Oasis, a protected area preserving a stretch of lagoon and fish valley open to the public with nature trails. Codevigo is therefore a convenient base for a day devoted to exploring the wetland environments of the southern lagoon, away from the tourist flows of central Venice.
