L'histoire de Caerano di San Marco
Origins and early records
The territory of Caerano di San Marco shows evidence of human presence dating back to the Bronze Age, with worked stone artefacts found in the local hills. The earliest written document mentioning the village dates to 27 January 1148, a notarial deed recording a land transaction in the "villa de Cairano". From 1339 the territory came under the rule of the Republic of Venice, as "Villa de Caeran", marking the start of a long phase of agricultural development tied to Venetian management of the countryside.
The Brentella canal and agricultural development
A key event in Caerano's history was the construction of the Brentella canal, requested in 1435 by representatives of Treviso to Venice to irrigate the fields and encourage the settlement and farming of the land, drawing water from the Piave river. From the mid-16th century the Girardi family, later Benzi, became the town's main landowners, eventually holding more than two thirds of the municipal territory.
Villa Benzi Zecchini
In the 16th century the landowning family had the complex now known as Villa Benzi Zecchini built. Over the following centuries it passed through several owners until it was bought by the Municipality in 1980. After a lengthy restoration, the local administration turned the villa into a cultural centre, now run as a foundation and hosting initiatives and events for the local community.
The Montelletto and the pedemontana landscape
The landscape of Caerano di San Marco is defined by the Montelletto, or Rive di Caerano, a small rise that forms the natural continuation of the Montello northeast of the town. The Montello itself, with its oak woods once protected under Venetian Republic law for timber destined for the Venetian shipyards, remains a popular destination for walks and excursions easily reached from the town.
