Sella Giudicarie in the Giudicarie: the Four Villages of the Merger
Sella Giudicarie is a scattered municipality established on 1 January 2016 through the merger of four independent municipalities of the inner Giudicarie: Bondo, Breguzzo, Lardaro and Roncone, which became the administrative seat, based in Piazza Battisti. The municipal territory unfolds across the upper Chiese Valley, covering more than 85 square kilometres, and today has fewer than three thousand inhabitants spread across the four settlements, each of which keeps its own parish, dialect and identity: the bregucc of Breguzzo, the bondesi (or codér) of Bondo, the people of Lardaro tied to the western Trentino dialect, and the roncatesi gathered around the parish of Santo Stefano. The name chosen for the new municipality recalls the Sella di Bondo, the pass that marks the watershed between the Chiese basin, a tributary of the Oglio, and the Sarca basin, which flows down toward Lake Garda: a geographical detail that neatly sums up this corner of Trentino's hinge position, historically a crossroads between the valleys of the Brescia area and the heart of the Giudicarie.
Lake Roncone and the Surrounding Nature
On the outskirts of the village of Roncone lies the lake that bears its name, a small body of water set within the basin of the upper Chiese Valley and surrounded by coniferous woods that make it a popular walking destination for residents and visitors alike. Lake Roncone sits within a landscape where the cultivated valley floor quickly gives way to wooded slopes climbing toward the higher elevations of the municipal territory, in a setting still relatively untouched compared with more touristic parts of Trentino. Slow walks along its shores allow visitors to observe up close a low- to mid-altitude alpine ecosystem, with mixed woods of Norway spruce, beech and larch that offer shade in summer and vivid colours in autumn. The presence of water, together with the Adanà stream that runs through the village of Roncone, makes the watery landscape one of the defining features of this part of the Giudicarie, where nature is closely interwoven with everyday life in the villages of Sella Giudicarie.
Adamello-Brenta Park and the Breguzzo and Fumo Valleys
The territory of Sella Giudicarie borders the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, Trentino's largest protected area, which covers more than 62,000 hectares between the Adamello-Presanella and Brenta Dolomites mountain groups. From Breguzzo, access opens up to the Val di Breguzzo, a side valley climbing toward the high altitudes of the Adamello massif, while from Lardaro, following the provincial road that leads toward Daone and Lake Malga Bissina, one reaches the Val di Fumo, the wildest and highest stretch of the neighbouring Val di Daone, dominated by the peak of Carè Alto and closed, at its head, by the glaciers from which the Chiese river originates. In these valleys the park protects highly valuable alpine wildlife, symbolised by the brown bear, reintroduced from 1999 onward and now firmly back inhabiting the woods and high altitudes of western Trentino, alongside chamois, deer and a rich alpine flora ranging from broadleaf woods on the valley floor to high-altitude meadows.
Fortifications and Border History
The position of Sella Giudicarie, right on the border between the valleys of the Brescia area and the heart of Trentino, made this territory a strategic front at several points in history. At Lardaro lie the remains of the fortified barrier built from 1860 onward by the Austro-Hungarian Empire to defend the road from the Brescia territory, annexed to the Kingdom of Italy after the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866: among the five forts of the system, Forte Larino, restored between 2006 and 2008 and built of chisel-worked granite blocks, together with the nearby Forte Corno, remains the best-preserved testimony to this 19th-century military architecture. The barrier later became the scene of operations during the First World War, when the front line ran just a few kilometres from here. At Bondo, where the eponymous Sella marks the watershed between the Chiese and the Sarca, stands the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery built in 1916, commemorating the fallen of the conflict and ranking among the most significant places of remembrance in the Giudicarie.
Traditions and Experiences Across the Four Villages
Despite the administrative unification, each of the four villages of Sella Giudicarie keeps its own patron saint's feast, historic churches and traditions: the Church of Sant'Andrea in Breguzzo, that of San Michele Arcangelo in Lardaro and that of Santo Stefano in Roncone still mark the local religious calendar, while at Bondo the memory of the Great War coexists with a rural mountain economy of livestock farming, woodland and small-scale agriculture. The territory lends itself to slow tourism, with hikes or mountain-bike rides along the trails connecting the four settlements, excursions toward the Adamello-Brenta Park and the side valleys of Breguzzo and Fumo, and stops at the farmsteads and alpine huts where cheese and dairy products are still made according to tradition. The proximity to Tione di Trento and the rest of the inner Giudicarie also makes Sella Giudicarie a quiet base from which to explore the whole district, between the Brenta Dolomites to the north and the lakes of Lombardy to the south.
