L'histoire de Lagundo
A municipality at the gates of Merano
Lagundo borders directly on Merano, sharing something of its urban character while keeping an identity of its own, more intimate and closely tied to the countryside. Its position, at the point where the Val Venosta opens onto the Merano basin, has always made it both a place of passage and a place to stop, valued for its closeness to city services without losing the calm of a rural setting. The historic core, with its parish church and traditional houses, sits alongside residential neighbourhoods that grew over time to accommodate holiday tourism. Direct connections to central Merano make the village a practical base for visiting the spa town while staying in a quieter environment. This double nature, poised between urban proximity and an agricultural vocation, is one of the traits that best defines Lagundo within the Burgraviato, the historic area surrounding Merano on both banks of the Adige.
Mild climate, orchards and vineyards
The climate of the Merano basin is among the mildest in the Alpine arc, sheltered by the surrounding mountain ranges and favoured by an exposure that allows for gentle winters and summers that are rarely excessive. This condition has allowed Lagundo to develop a strong agricultural vocation, still visible today in the apple orchards stretching as far as the eye can see along the valley floor and in the vineyards climbing the first hillsides, held in place by dry-stone walls and terracing. Fruit growing, apples in particular, has for generations been central to the local economy, while viticulture contributes to an orderly, well-tended agrarian landscape that changes colour with the seasons, from spring blossom to the deep green of summer and the golden tones of autumn. This patchwork of crops is not only productive but also the defining feature of the landscape that accompanies every walk around the village.
The irrigation-channel paths: the Algunder Waalweg
One of the most characteristic features of Lagundo's territory is its Waalwege, the paths that follow the course of the old irrigation channels (Waale) used for centuries to water the orchards and vineyards of the Merano basin. The best-known route linked to the village is the Lagundo channel path, the Algunder Waalweg, a flat and accessible trail that winds through the orchards, offering open views over the valley and the surrounding mountains. Walking alongside the channel, listening to the steady flow of water, reveals a traditional irrigation system that is still partly in use, a testament to the agricultural ingenuity that made this area fertile. The gentle gradient and well-kept surfaces make these paths suitable for a wide range of visitors, including families with children and less experienced walkers, and they remain one of the most representative experiences for anyone visiting Lagundo at any time of year.
The Tessa Group Nature Park
The municipal territory of Lagundo touches the boundaries of the Tessa Group Nature Park, one of South Tyrol's largest protected areas, stretching along the slopes that separate the Val Venosta from the Val Passiria. The park preserves very different environments, from broadleaf and conifer woodland to high-altitude grasslands and the rocky formations of the group's highest peaks. From the outskirts of Lagundo, the first access points open onto trails climbing towards higher elevations, offering an immediate contrast with the cultivated landscape of the valley floor: within a few tens of minutes' walk, the orchards give way to a wilder mountain environment. The park is therefore a natural extension for hikers staying in Lagundo who wish to combine the flat walks along the irrigation channels with more demanding routes at higher altitude, in a setting of considerable natural value.
Gentle tourism between walks and surroundings
Thanks to the combination of mild climate, flat trails and proximity to Merano, Lagundo has established itself as an ideal base for gentle tourism, geared towards wellbeing and the slow discovery of the area. Visitors staying here can alternate walks along the Algunder Waalweg with more demanding hikes into the Tessa Group Nature Park, while still being able to reach central Merano within a short time, with its famous Tappeiner Promenade, riverside walks and spa facilities. Nearby stands Castel Tirolo, the ancient seat of the Counts of Tyrol and a historic symbol of the region, a customary destination for anyone visiting the area to explore its cultural roots. This network of attractions, spread over a short and easily reachable radius, makes it possible to build a balanced stay between nature, history and relaxation, confirming Lagundo's vocation as a quiet holiday destination well connected to the main sights of the Burgraviato.
