The sunniest municipality in Val Venosta
Laces lies at the heart of Val Venosta, the valley that follows the Adige upstream towards the border with Switzerland and Austria, and is known as one of the sunniest and driest places in the whole Alps. The village stretches across the valley floor, sheltered by the slopes that protect it from damp winds and favour a mild, stable climate for much of the year. This privileged exposure has made Laces a reference point not only for agriculture but also for anyone seeking a quiet base from which to explore the valley: the settlement retains a layout typical of Val Venosta, with stone houses, historic churches, and a pace of life still closely tied to the land. Around the village, vineyards and orchards shape the landscape, while higher up the slopes give way to woods and mountain pastures.
Orchards and soft fruits, the heart of the local economy
The dry climate and abundant sunshine hours have made the Laces area one of the most important districts in Val Venosta for apple growing, where the fruit finds ideal conditions in the wide swing between day and night temperatures. Alongside the orchards, which cover large portions of the valley floor with neat rows of trees, the cultivation of small soft fruits has also developed over the years, including raspberries and strawberries, often sold at local farmhouses and markets. This agricultural vocation is not only economic but also scenic: driving or cycling along the country roads around the village, especially in spring during blossom time or in autumn at harvest, one crosses stretches of orchards that offer striking views with the mountains as a backdrop.
Monte Sole above Tarres and San Martino al Monte
From Laces a cable car climbs up to the sun-drenched Monte Sole plateau above the hamlet of Tarres, one of the most cherished panoramic terraces in the valley thanks to its exposure, which gives it light for much of the day. The plateau is an ideal starting point for walks among pastures and woods, with views stretching across Val Venosta and the surrounding peaks. From here one can carry on to the pilgrimage church of San Martino al Monte, an isolated sacred building set in a high, secluded spot, a traditional place of devotion for the valley's inhabitants and a popular stop for hikers and walkers seeking a quiet place away from the valley floor.
The Val Venosta cycle path and the Via Claudia Augusta
Laces is crossed by the Val Venosta cycle path, one of the most popular cycle-tourism routes in South Tyrol, which follows the course of the Adige, linking the valley's villages with a flat, well-signposted route suitable for families and cyclists of every level. The route follows, in several stretches, that of the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, the Roman road that connected northern Italy with the regions north of the Alps, passing precisely through Val Venosta. Riding along this route through Laces, cyclists pass orchards, small settlements and glimpses of the river, on an itinerary that combines gentle mobility with the historical memory of the area.
At the gateway to Stelvio National Park and Val Martello
The position of Laces, at the foot of the Ortles-Cevedale massif, makes it a convenient base for those wishing to venture into Stelvio National Park, one of the most extensive protected areas in the Alps, and into the nearby Val Martello, a side valley known for its glaciers, alpine lakes and high-altitude trails. From Laces it is possible to reach the entrance to Val Martello in a short time, from which excursions set off towards mountain huts and the valley's astronomical observatory, or to head towards other access points to the park for more demanding trekking routes. This proximity to high mountains, combined with the sunny agricultural valley floor, is one of the distinctive traits of Laces.
