A village in the lower Val di Non
Cis lies in the lower part of Val di Non, on the left side of the valley carved by the Noce torrent, in a secluded position compared to better-known centres such as Cles. The village sits near Livo, Bresimo and Rumo, in a territory marked by terraces planted with apple orchards, coniferous woods and small rural hamlets. Its proximity to Lake Santa Giustina makes it a quiet starting point for exploring the valley away from the main tourist flows, preserving a genuine character tied to the rhythms of mountain farming.
History and origins of the village
Like many settlements in Val di Non, Cis has its roots in the medieval period, when scattered small clusters consolidated around churches and farmsteads along the cultivable slopes of the valley. Its local history is tied to the wider system of Trentino's rural communities, once under the authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento and later absorbed into the administrative changes that shaped the whole region. The traditional economy, based on subsistence farming and livestock breeding, has left traces still visible in the rural architecture and in the scattered layout of the farmsteads across the territory.
Nature between the Noce and Lake Santa Giustina
The landscape of Cis is shaped by the Noce torrent flowing through the valley floor and by the proximity of Lake Santa Giustina, the large artificial basin that characterises the whole of Val di Non. Around the village stretch orderly apple orchards, mixed woods and meadows rising towards the first slopes of the Maddalene, the mountain range closing the valley to the south. This mosaic of environments, from the river valley floor to the wooded slopes, offers a variety of scenic views that change colour with the seasons, from the spring apple blossom to the warm hues of autumn.

Cis is a good base for walks and hikes in the lower Val di Non, with trails crossing orchards and woods that connect the village to the nearby municipalities of Livo, Bresimo and Rumo. The farm tracks running through the orchards are suited to easy, family-friendly walks, while paths climbing towards the higher slopes lead to panoramic viewpoints over the valley and Lake Santa Giustina. For cyclists, the routes following the course of the Noce offer a gentle way to discover the area's rural landscape, away from the traffic of the main roads.
Local flavours and traditions
The agricultural identity of Cis is closely tied to the DOP Val di Non apple, grown on the terraces surrounding the village and a symbol of the whole valley. Rural life still follows the rhythm of the fruit-growing seasons, from spring blossom to autumn harvest, moments that also mark the small community traditions of the village. The local cuisine, simple and tied to mountain produce, features dairy products, cured meats and, of course, the apple, star ingredient of typical Trentino desserts and dishes.
