Aldeno in the Vallagarina, on the Right Bank of the Adige

Aldeno lies in the Vallagarina, the valley carved by the Adige between Trento and Rovereto, about ten kilometres southwest of the Trentino capital. The town sits on the right bank of the river, on a broad alluvial cone that the Arione stream has deposited over the centuries flowing down from the eastern slopes of Monte Bondone, against which the settlement rests. The municipal territory, covering less than nine square kilometres, stretches between mountain and valley floor: uphill the woods and meadows climbing toward the Bondone and the Vigolana, downhill the cultivated fields reaching to the Adige. This position, astride the first Alpine foothills and the river plain, has for centuries made Aldeno a place of passage along the Trento-Verona axis, already travelled in Roman times by the Via Claudia Augusta, and today a farming and residential reference point of the lower Vallagarina.

The Wine of Aldeno: Merlot, Marzemino and the Local Winery

Winemaking has always been part of Aldeno's identity, with vineyards spreading across the alluvial cone and the first sun-facing slopes at the foot of the Bondone. The town's most representative wine is Merlot, to which every autumn is dedicated MondoMerlot, the National Exhibition of Italian Merlot wines, which draws to Aldeno more than a hundred labels from across the country and ranks among the most important events dedicated to this grape variety in Italy. Alongside Merlot, the local vineyards also grow Marzemino, the indigenous red grape variety widespread throughout the Vallagarina and made famous by Mozart's Don Giovanni, which yields fragrant, generously bodied wines. The Cantina di Aldeno works with both varieties, offering them in different styles, from young to passito, while in August the Calici di Stelle event combines wine tastings with stargazing on midsummer evenings.

Monte Bondone, the Cornetto and the Three Peaks

Behind Aldeno rise the eastern slopes of Monte Bondone, Trento's mountain par excellence, whose three peaks, the Cornetto, the Doss d'Abramo and the Cima Verde, form one of the best known and most walked hiking routes in the whole Trento area, the famous Three Peaks loop. The classic starting point is Rifugio Viote, from where a marked trail climbs the Val del Merto up to the Cornetto before continuing along the ridge toward the other two summits, through an environment of high-altitude meadows and coniferous woods that turns into a carpet of Alpine blooms at the start of summer. On the opposite side of the valley lie the heights of the Vigolana, completing a mountain panorama that flanks Aldeno on both fronts and offers, just a short distance from the vine-covered valley floor, routes for every fitness level, from walks at the foot of the mountain to more demanding hikes toward the peaks.

The Adige Cycle Path and the Valley Landscape

Aldeno is crossed by the Adige cycle path, one of the most popular cycling routes in Trentino, which follows the river from Trento toward Rovereto and, further south, to Lake Garda and Verona, forming part of the long route that runs from the Resia Pass down to the Adriatic Sea. In the stretch running alongside Aldeno the path crosses a farming landscape of vineyards, orchards and cultivated fields, with the river on one side and the first heights of the Bondone and the Vigolana in the background. Flat and suitable for all ages, the path can be ridden in a few hours and links Aldeno to the other towns of the Vallagarina, offering stops among local wineries. The Arione stream, flowing down from the mountains toward the Adige, adds a further natural feature to the territory: along its course traces of the old mills and workshops that for centuries harnessed its power can still be found.

History, Traditions and Experiences

The history of Aldeno has roots going back to the Bronze Age and continues into Roman times, when the territory was crossed by the Via Claudia Augusta. From the Middle Ages until 1818 the town was one of the seven communities of the Comun Comunale, the ancient institution that jointly administered woods and pastures across the valleys, whose memory is still celebrated today on a rotating basis among the seven municipalities with a festival held between May and June. During the First World War Aldeno housed the headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian XXI Army Corps, while in the spring of 1945 the town lived through clashes tied to the partisan resistance. Alongside its military and administrative history, Aldeno developed over the centuries a craft tradition linked to woodworking and metalworking, of which IGF, one of the leading bookbinding businesses in Trentino, still stands as evidence today. Between historic churches, a surviving civic tower and the autumn food-and-wine events, the town offers visitors a glimpse into a rural community still bound to its traditions.
