Castellina in Chianti lies in the province of Siena, Tuscany, within the area historically known as Chianti, world-famous for its wine production. The town sits atop a hill that marks the watershed between three valleys, the Elsa, Pesa and Arbia, a strategic position that made it a stronghold and crossroads since ancient times. It is just a few kilometres from Siena and other Chianti towns such as Radda and Greve, and is easily reached along the Chiantigiana road, one of the region's most scenic routes.
History and origins
Castellina's origins date back to Etruscan times, as shown by archaeological remains found nearby, including a burial mound dating back several centuries before the Christian era. In the Middle Ages the town became a defensive stronghold of the Republic of Florence, sitting on the contested border with the Republic of Siena, a role reflected in its very name, which recalls its function as a fortified castle outpost. It belonged to the so-called Lega del Chianti together with neighbouring towns, a union established for the defensive and administrative coordination of the area, and for centuries it controlled the routes connecting Florence and Siena.

The municipal territory is immersed in the rolling hill landscape typical of Chianti, made up of neat rows of vineyards, centuries-old olive groves and woods of oak and cypress alternating along the ridgelines.
