Introduction and location
Bucine lies in the heart of the upper Valdarno, in the province of Arezzo, along the road that links Arezzo to Siena through the hills of the Chianti Aretini. The municipal territory is large and scattered across numerous hamlets, each with its own character: from the main town, which grew around the railway station and local businesses, to hillside villages such as Ambra, Cennina, Montebenichi and San Leolino, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodland. This position, halfway between two of Tuscany's most visited art cities, makes Bucine a quiet and convenient base for exploring the area away from the crowds of the better-known centres.
History and origins
Bucine's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the area lay along the contested border between the republics of Arezzo and Siena, a strategic zone dotted with castles and watchtowers. Remains of these fortifications can still be seen in the hamlet of Cennina, where the ruins of an old castle overlook the valley, and in Montebenichi, a small fortified settlement that has preserved its medieval layout. In later centuries the territory came under Florentine control, following the fate of the wider Valdarno area, and gradually developed as a farming community, keeping to this day a strong rural identity tied to the land and its peasant traditions.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Bucine alternates gentle hills planted with vines and olive trees with more wooded stretches, where chestnuts and oaks cover the less exposed slopes. The Ambra stream, a tributary of the Arno, crosses the southern part of the territory, shaping the small valley that gives its name to the hamlet of the same name, while further north the landscape opens toward the Valdarno plain. This mosaic of fields, rows of vines and woodland offers routes suited to walking and cycling, with scenic viewpoints looking out over the Chianti hills and, on clearer days, toward the Apennine ridges near Arezzo.
What to do and see
Visitors to Bucine can enjoy a slow style of tourism, made up of walks between the hamlets and stops in small village squares. In Ambra you can stroll along the streets of the centre, in Montebenichi admire the fortified layout of the medieval settlement, while in Cennina a short climb on foot leads to the remains of the castle and views over the valley. The hamlet of San Leolino preserves one of the area's most notable Romanesque parish churches, a testimony to the territory's medieval religious architecture. For nature lovers, hillside trails and gravel roads are well suited to walking or cycling among vineyards and woodland.
Flavours and traditions
Bucine's farming economy is reflected on the table: the territory falls within the Chianti Colli Aretini production zone, and local cellars offer structured red wines alongside good-quality extra virgin olive oil. Trattorias in the hamlets serve dishes from Tuscan peasant tradition, from cured meats to pasta with game-based sauces, down to simple seasonal desserts. Village festivals and local markets, held in the various hamlets throughout the year, remain the best opportunity to taste local produce straight from the producers and get to know the habits of a community still tied to the rhythms of the countryside.
