Introduction and location
Agliana lies in the Pistoia Plain, the flat stretch of central Tuscany between the cities of Pistoia and Prato, not far from Florence. The town's territory is crossed by the Ombrone Pistoiese stream, which over the centuries has shaped a fertile, regular landscape. Well connected by roads and railway linking the main Tuscan cities, Agliana is a convenient base for exploring both the region's art centres and the surrounding hills, while keeping its own identity rooted in everyday farming and craft life.
History and origins
Agliana's territory has roots going back to Roman times, when the plain between Pistoia and Prato was divided through centuriation, the geometric field pattern still visible in the grid of roads and canals crossing the area today. For centuries the area gravitated around Pistoia, sharing its historical and administrative fortunes. Only in 1961 did Agliana gain municipal autonomy, separating from Pistoia's territory and starting its own path of growth, tied above all to specialised agriculture and the craft activities that still define its character today.
